hi Grant,
Greetings from blue and sunny Berlin. I hope all is very well.
The workshop is a great idea. I’d certainly like to join in.
I’ve been thinking of setting up Raspberry pi streaming for a while and with time on my hands this seems a good moment.
Which of the R.pi versions available do you recommend? I probably wouldn't use it for anything but the streaming.
All wishes Stay well Peter

I just thought I would share a different type of setup that might appeal to those who are good with field recording equipment but maybe not so good with Raspberry Pi and tablet/phone.
I use a Toughbook Laptop running Reaper and ShoutVST streaming plugin. input side has stereo pair of DPA 4060 lavs mounted on a plywood board with various furries. The interface is a Sound Devices mix-pre6. Computer and interface are stored in a plastic box with a thick blanket inside for cold winter temps.
Sound quality is great. ShoutVST is not so great. The main issue is that when internet checks out the plugin does not reconnect automatically when internet is restored. I live in a rural place with Satellite internet so this is s frequent issue. The feed from router has to be wifi rather wired due to physical limits.
I could use Butt for the streaming but I like having the implementation within Reaper to use other plugins for signal processing.
So for now it is a choice of quality over quantity.
With this setup I can also remove the computer and record in locations without internet. The toughbook though has capability for cellular card but I haven't shelled out the money for that yet. Also its battery life may not last as long. I get 14 hrs of clean power for the mix pre on a usb3 charger.
For pics, sound and and other info - http://www.darrencopeland.net/web2/?p=563
For my feed on locusonus look for South River Warbler's Roost in Central Ontario, Canada. Just a bit north west on the map from Zac's pond feed.
Cheers Darren

hi Milos, Peter & all,
there was the wolfson / cirrus logic board with stereo line in and plugin, worked good with eg. primo capsules, or any other PIP / electret condenser mic. discontinued, not available any more.
there is the IQ Audio http://iqaudio.co.uk/hats/100-pi-codec.html where Grant, Gregoire, I and others have been sort of involved, at least we've been providing ideas to IQAudio.
this board sounds good and works with the mentioned mics. but it's sort of ... unbalanced ... and not intuitive to configure, though not complicated. at the moment I'd say it's the best available.
then there is usb audio, means you can connect a usb mic, or recorder, or soundcard, works most of the times, but is not stable (my experience) for days or longer.
let me know if you need more info or help. all above is valid for raspberry pi. there's also the option to use a phone with USB device, host cable / adapter required.
bests, Udo

There is no PIP on any of the the Audio Injector interfaces. In addition to this, the signal level must be at line level, i.e., coming from a mixer output. In general, most sound interfaces do NOT support mic-level signals or PIP. I have an old Pi running with a Wolfson card for my Locusonus streaming setup.I have two Shure omni boundary mics connected to the matching preamps (mini 4 pin to XLR), running into an M-Audio Audio Buddy that supplies the phantom power for the mics and brings it up to line level. Then that signal is EQ'd by an old Realistic stereo semi-parametric EQ before going into the Wolfson card. I have used an inexpensive (<$USD 30.00) USB sound interface, the Vantec NBA-200U USB External 7.1 Channel Audio Adapter, for running multi-channel sound out from a Pi for a gallery installation and it worked quite well. The drivers are built into the standard Pi Debian load, so no fussing around. It does have two mic inputs and I believe that they are PIP as well, but note that these are two mono inputs, so you may need to make a simple adapter cable to use this interface. But understand that I have not personally tried it, so I make no guarantees as to the PIP or the ease of select the two mic inputs from Debian. For the price, it's worth the effort to find out. PIP mics are designed to be used with stereo portable memory recorders, so you are going to have a tough time finding any computer sound interface that provides PIP facilities. One way to solve the streaming conundrum is to employ an inexpensive stereo USB interface that can accept a pair of regular (not PIP) mics and work with the Pi. This solves the preamp issue and most of these interfaces also supply phantom power if you need it. I believe that Behringer and a number of other well known manufacturers make such interfaces that work out of the box with the Pi without any further need for special drivers. The cost is ~ $USD 100.00. Check out some of the Locusonus site descriptions here in the USA on the soundmap and you will find at least one that uses exactly this configuration. I haven't been following this thread until now, but I would think that the folks making up Pi loads for streaming would have an image that is configurable to use a stereo USB sound interface. If not, then you have to lobby for it or contact the fellow(s) I just mentioned from the soundmap and find out what they use. Good luck! BTW, if you just need to do streaming for a short time, take one of your memory recorders, put in into record-pause mode and then take the line out (or headphone out) into your Audio Injector (or other Pi shield) and you're golden. The memory recorder takes care of the PIP & preamp needs for you. Be sure to power the recorder from an AC supply so you don't need to worry about the batteries.
And here is the USB sound interface for the Pi I was talking about:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004HXGJ3S/ref=psdc_3015427011_t1_B07VSHCGWD

I have been pretty lucky with USB Audio: I've been running a stream 24/7 since 2015 with the Locus Sonus streambox image and a Behringer UCA202 (USB with RCA line in/out, no mic preamps) with no stability problems. No config reqiuired.
The IQuadio boards have a preamp with bias for electrets, but it looks like they're mono. (The preamp seems to be built-in to the CODEC chip they're using. Those are usually quite noisy.)
If folks want high quality stereo preamps for 3.5mm "plug-in power" mics, with no external power supply required, the already-mentioned PiSound looks like a promising option (I haven't used one.): https://blokas.io/pisound It's expensive, though. Note: plugin power bias is disabled by default, but can be enabled by soldering a jumper:https://blokas.io/pisound/docs/Audio/#6v-bias-solder-jumpers
If you have XLR mics, a "professional" USB interface like the Behringer UMC202HD is a little more money but it should work fine and you can use it for other computers too (no drivers required). 2 low-noise XLR preamps with phantom power, powered by the USB port. Grant uses the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, which is similar and a bit more money.
Lots of great options. Viva REVEIL!

Hi,
I've been streaming for about 1 month or so now and have tried different solutions. It also depends on how much gain you want from your mic's. I am using this now and I like it very much:
- Raspberry Pi Zero W (with the Locus image) - Behringer U-Phoria UM2 USB audio interface (mono, not expensive (€29) and good quality) - Rode VXLR+ fantoom adapter (transform the 48V phantom to approximately 7,5V, for supplying the Primo's) - Low-Noise Binaural Mics (Primo EM172)

Udo. I'm using an old Pi 2, streaming over wired ethernet. On older Pis and older streambox builds I needed to add "dwc_otg.speed=1" to cmdline.txt (reduces all USB to 1.0 speed) to avoid dropped samples every few seconds. But this hasn't been a problem for more recent Pi & streambox OS versions. My audio hardware involves hydrophones, custom preamps, and a radio link with a line-level output, so I didn't need preamps for my stream. https://www.zachpoff.com/artwork/pondstation/
FYI, the Pi 4 has a totally different USB architecture with much faster I/O and no CPU load. It also seems to have much cleaner USB power rails, which is great news for audio interfaces. I haven't streamed with it yet because it has been repurposed as a spare desktop for my daughter's school work (thanks COVID!)

Hi Miloš
I wish this had a one-line answer!
If your microphones take 48V Phantom power, then you can use a range of USB soundcards with the Pi. At SC we use a lot the Focurite 2i2 2nd Gen, which is discontinued, available quite cheaply, and has great preamps.
(Note that the newer 2i2 3rd Generation, which a really nice little preamp imo, requires a manual button press to activate Phantom power on boot, which makes it effectively useless for remote streaming applications.)
Locus Sonus favor a similar soundcard. You can find many details on Grégoire Lauvin's streambox design eg here: http://locusonus.org/wiki/index.php?page=Electret+mics.en
You can modify a pair of Primo EM-172 or EM-272 electret capsules to work with 48V Phantom power by following the build notes here: https://paper.dropbox.com/doc/Streambox-with-Focusrite-Soundcard-y6K4xLUHuP3... This approach is the simplest mod possible and gives us very good results. Eg you can hear it in the south-walney stream, which has just returned to the map.. http://locus.creacast.com:9001/south_walney.mp3
Grégoire has a more refined, and more complicated circuit, as described above.
You can also buy microphones based on the Primo and modified for 48V bias voltage from micboosters: https://micbooster.com/10-clippy-microphones They are good but quite expensive.
We are still looking for a really good and affordable interface between the Pi and the microphones.. we'd better make one..

hi Grant,
Greetings from blue and sunny Berlin.

Hi Peter and all
I like the Raspberry Pi 3B personally.
The latest Streambox software by Locus Sonus works well on all models of the Pi including the Pi 4. The free download link and detailed instructions are here:
http://locusonus.org/streambox/
I just happen to like the Pi 3B because it's heavily field tested, especially with the Focusrite 2i2 2nd Generation soundcard as an interface.
[ I'm sorry I left an l off the URL on methods! Thanks those who picked that up. The correct one should be:
http://soundtent.org/streaming_recipes.html
Details on the workshop at 14:00 London time tomorrow Saturday are here:

The workshop will run for 40min (a useful limit for free Zoom accounts!). The link to join is here:

My issue is...
I tried streaming with android phone using zoom h2 as audio interface via adapter, lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter. But the locus cast app keeps using internal mic. Seems the phone doesn't recognized zoom h2. I set zoom h2 as audio I/O. Is there some setting for the app? Or automatically recognize when it's connected?

Thanks Jiyeon
I expect you already made the connection to the Zoom and then launched Locuscast, and these kinds of things.
With the Zoom H1 I have to do 2 button presses to first select and then confirm that i want it work as an interface and not a storage device. I bet you did that already
If I then launch Locuscast, the Audio link under SETUP > Advanced settings does not alert me to the new soundcard. I think it is intended to use the new external interface automatically.
Stéphane Cousot will be able to give details on the expected operation.
I will check if the iOS version is working with the Zoom.. It is
So it seems the question if definitely about the Android version
Thanks!

Basically, when broadcasting from a phone are you just limited to the onboard mic?

Hey Grant,
Sorry, I got little confused because I was testing locuscast app with android phone and iphone at the same time...
That connection issue is in 'iphone with zoon h2 via adaptor'.
For android phone, I only test with internal mic as I don't have any adaptor at the moment.
Thanks for your response and will see you tonight.

For android phone, I only test with internal mic as I don't have any adaptor at the moment.
Thanks for your response and will see you tonight.

Thanks Tom
Apologies for filling the list with Reveil stuff
Thank you very much to all those who have set up and are working on setting up streams. It's great to have this wider and more diverse set of soundscapes appearing on the map.
The Reveil broadcast spans 24 timezones. If we spend 10 minutes in each location, we need 6 x 24 locations across the timezones = 144 live streams. In practice many of the streams are concentrated in certain zones, leaving others with sparse or non-existent coverage. We value all the streams, but for those in quarantine on Pacific and Atlantic islands and in the Polar regions: your live streams are particularly welcome.
Here's an invite to the Zoom workshop tomorrow Saturday 18th at 14:00 UTC+1
https://us04web.zoom.us/j/76425866316 https://us04web.zoom.us/j/76425866316 Meeting ID: 764 2586 6316
No password is needed to join. We ll also post the URL to the meeting when it happens at this page:
https://paper.dropbox.com/doc/Reveil-Streaming-Workshop-2--AyNLzBm94x3tdZ78H...
which also has streaming links and instructions.
The workshop will cover similar ground to the one on the 11th, so may be of less interest to those who were at that one. The video, audio and chat history from the 11th are here for reference: https://paper.dropbox.com/doc/Reveil-Streaming-Workshop--AyMVrk2tj0azW50CkS6...
We will go over settings for Broadcast Using This Tool (BUTT) on laptop, and Locuscast on iOS.
If anybody would like to do a short update on streaming with Android, that would be great - let me know?
Thanks very much

Sorry, I got little confused because I was testing locuscast app with android phone and iphone at the same time...
That connection issue is in 'iphone with zoon h2 via adaptor'.
For android phone, I only test with internal mic as I don't have any adaptor at the moment.
Thanks for your response and will see you tonight.

there are basically 2 configs, one is for the internal linux mixer's settings, e.g. to set levels and de/activate features, second is for darkice, which takes care about your stream encoding and transport to a streaming server. but first check if the cirrus board is recognized:
fist check if the cirrus board drivers are loaded: pi@raspi ~ $ lsmod | grep cirrus snd_soc_rpi_cirrus 24576 0 snd_soc_core 188416 7 snd_soc_wm8804,snd_soc_rpi_cirrus,... snd_pcm 98304 6 snd_soc_wm8804,snd_soc_rpi_cirrus, ... snd 69632 7 snd_compress,snd_seq,snd_soc_rpi_cirrus,...
then check if the card is seen by the alsa sound system: pi@raspi ~ $ arecord -l **** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices **** card 0: RPiCirrus [RPi-Cirrus], device 0: WM5102 AiFi wm5102-aif1-0 [] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
from here it's only about the right config. let me know... bests, udo

I'm trying to make work a Audioinjector-ultra with streambox. I'm in contact with Stéphane.
At this point, it works with a regular Raspbian, but not with Streambox, which is on Arch. Probably a driver issue.

hi Karina, I've a pi2 with cirrus, works fine. If you need some configs, let me know.

Hi Grant,
I would like to know "The password" for when Butt streaming. I found on the paper saying that "The password is *not* your account password. *Please contact us to get it*."
My Blackberry got a battery/display problem so I had to change my streaming phone to iphone. Internal mic of iphone seems louder than the one of Blackberry, but would be better with more volume.
So, what I try to do is iphone streaming -> soundflower routing(laptop at home) -> Butt with increased volume restreaming. I made two steram accounts at Locus Sonus.

Hello all,
I finally got my franken-board working! Currently running a test from the balcony of my parents house, but I’ll be moving it to the slagheap this week.
I've attached two photos of the setup: I have a Wolfson Audio Card modified to fit the Pi A+ with a simple RC circuit providing the 3v needed to power a mono Em172 capsule.
Currently without a fluffy so the wind noise is quite apparent.

Hi, Half of these mails are hitting my spam filter, can be hard to keep up. By way of an update on the audioinjector zero soundcard with streambox: I was able to get the system fully up and running, using the onboard supplied electret. Sound quality was poor with significant wifi noise with the supplied electret. I've ordered some em172 capsules in the meantime. I think the significant noise on the signal was because the soundcard is not properly isolated from the pi zero w it was sitting on. wifi noise was only experienced when streaming audio to locusonus soundstream. So now i need to unsolder the soundcard, and mount using 40pin ribbon cable. In summary, altough I may get this audioinjector zero card working, having to install using a 40 pin ribbon cable to defeat wifi noise is not ideal. I'll report back here when I can verify that the board works OK with the ribbon cable. Not sure I can recommend this board TBH, defintely not noob friendly, wifi noise, mono mic only, etc. i know a bit of linux, so was able to muddle through. Hi Grant
Thanks for the info about the event, as someone new to Locus I'd love to take part to get up to speed on how to make things work, and to participate in the Reveil event itself if possible. Are you able to send a zoom invite or should I go via the link you provided?
Best wishes
