It also depends on how much gain you want from your mic's. I am using this now and I like it very much:

- Raspberry Pi Zero W (with the Locus image)
- Behringer U-Phoria UM2 USB audio interface (mono, not expensive (€29) and good quality)
- Rode VXLR+ fantoom adapter (transform the 48V phantom to approximately 7,5V, for supplying the Primo's)
- Low-Noise Binaural Mics (Primo EM172)

that's interesting, and sounds like I should give it another try. 
the raspis route everything internally over USB, so it makes a
difference if you use e.g. wifi or lan, or an usb-hub etc.
how's your hardware config?
