April 18 2009 7pm- 10pm Over The Opening (OTO) 60 North 6th, 2nd floor Brooklyn, N.Y. 11211 SOAP BOX OPERA WORKSHOP is a project developed by the collective Artists Meeting. Honing in on the dramaturgy of theory, the group has adapted excerpts from a variety of scholarly and art-theory-based texts from different eras and genres to a "Soap Opera" filmic format whereby plots are reduced to one liners, drama is played out in an exaggerated manner and scenes rely on emotional turmoil and ambiguity to capture the distracted viewer. In the SOAP BOX OPERA WORKSHOP, professional actors and Artists Meeting members have thus adapted the texts as scripts for scenes of domestic and personal conflict and intrigue. The filming of these performances follows the parameters of the "affect image," as described in Gilles Deleuze's Cinema 1 and 2: Hence, the capture is restricted to only close-up shots of the performers, with no staging or sets, letting the detailed micro movements of the face, reflecting both external circumstances as well as inner reactions, carry the meaning of the episodes and scenes. The project draws from the decadence of Rimbaud, the deconstruction and criticism of Derrida and Foucault, and the controversy of Ted Kaczynski and Andy Warhol in order to combine the intellectual tract writing with soap opera-style acting. Taking inspiration from "All My Children" to "General Hospital", "Dark Shadows" and an array of South American soap opera acting styles, combined with the presence of literary criticism and theoretical text, Artists' Meeting creates a new genre: the Interpretive Soap Opera. During the exhibition at OTO a surprise element will contribute to the distracting nature of the soap opera and will interfere with the audience's reception of these transformed but otherwise scholarly texts. This evening (french hour) our server streaming is down since two/three hours. I'd got a call with the network engineer, he confirms that all will be ok in next hours. Raphaele Artists Meeting and Postmasters Gallery Present: Triptych Party in collaboration with You3b.com January 10th 7-9pm Postmasters Gallery 459 W. 19th St. NYC The art collective Artists Meeting presents an evening of video curiosities: found, outsider and accidental video art, culled from youtube, and spun into triptychs using You3b.com. Video triptychs involve three simultaneous video loops projected side by side on the gallery wall. While formally simple, the effect of the looping sequences, overlapping sounds and awkward juxtapositions is uncanny and unsettling. This is due to the slippery dis-harmonization of clip lengths, and the conceptual layering of the elements within the videos. For this 2nd youtube video show at Postmasters Gallery, the curators Thomas Hutchison, Maria Joao Salema and James Andrews have selected dozens of examples of original U3B triptychs created by members of Artists Meeting. Artists Meeting is a New York City based art collective. The Utsikten Kunstsenter is a new arena for art and technology in the south region in Norway. It was established in May 2008. It is not an art centre in a traditional sense. Exhibitions are not be limited to the main room, the "Multimedia hall", but will influence the space as a whole. An exhibition at Utsikten Kunstsenter includes for example the TV in the hotel rooms where on channel 2 there is a chance to exhibit artwork. In the foyer large projections can be viewed above the main entrance linked to a wireless headphone system. For the upcoming season, in the outdoor exhibition arena, we will begin "Digitial Perspectives", curated programs of site specific works in new media, sound video and film.
