[locustream] a message for streamers

Hello dear streamer team, I'm Esther Salmona, one of the first students of Locus Sonus. During Locus Sonus, I focused on a theorical approach and a poetical work : as soon as the first stream was born, i began writing on it and tried to describe it. The more I wrote, the more the text became a variation between sounds and words, in a form of synesthesia. This way of writing from sounds finds an origin in the World Soundscape Project, dating back to 1975 : European Sounds Diary (http://www.sfu.ca/~truax/wsp.html<http://www.sfu.ca/%7Etruax/wsp.html> ). The first name of my project was "The diary of streams", and it has now became a blog, carpophores : an irregular diary of writings from listenings. You can read carpophores here : http://carpophores.blogspot.com. Sorry it's in french, maybe in english later. What nature is this variation between sounds and words? Is it a loss or a benefit, or altogether another dimension? I need less technology for writing than is necessary for listening. What kind of questions this sort of LoFi ask? This is what I experiment with carpophores. I am taking part next year to an international contest of poetry : Poésie en Val-de-Marne (http://www.biennaledespoetes.fr/). I will present carpophores, so i will write with your sounds, your installation, your soundscape. The continuation of this work of course, depends on the regular presence of your streams so I wanted to let you know that I am very gratefull when they are available as much as possible. [locustream] PHP new Locustream soundmap / please check

Dear friends, The new Locustream PHP config is now ready. This system automates recognition of the streams by the soundmap. Thus you can directly update and add documentation on your stream (descriptions, images, etc.). This new config is intended to encourage growth of the project by simplifying the process of adding new webmikes and locations. In order to switch to the new soundmap, you need to fill up the on- line form and follow the steps: http://nujus.net/~locusonus/site/streams/map/admin/ The login and password needed to create an entry are : login : prems psw : prems You need to create an account (one by webmike) with your own login and psw (keep them for next updates). Be careful, we recommand to use as a login and password the name of your place (stream-name): for example harbour/harbour or avatar/avatar (if the name is already exists try another one) The url of your stream will have this form : http://locus.creacast.com:9001/location_streamname.ogg Location is your town, stream-name is your place (some example: boston_harbour.ogg / quebec_avatar.ogg / paris_18.ogg / ) This must exactly corresponds to the values you enter in your Pd patch. The process is very simple : just enter specific informations concerning your stream into each string, and upload images you want to. Before finishing, you can check on the test map you'll find on the same page, and of course don't forget to save. [locustream] Locustream Tuner in Paris (stay tuned !)

Dear Streamers. As you might or might not of understood from a previous message (in French) Locus Sonus will be in Paris this weekend and the Locustream tuner will running during the Festival "Sous la plage" from Saturday morning to Sunday evening. As usual we would be grateful for as much online presence as you can muster. Also we now have a big pile of old PCs (50) which we are configuring to stream, in-fact we've now got it so that when you plug in the machine it boots up and starts streaming. So if you are having problems because you do not have a machine permanently available for the streaming project or if you know someone else who would like to set up a stream we would be happy to provide one, our biggest problem right now is shipping which is rather expensive (the machines where given to us by a kind sponsor) so if anyone has any great ideas, or is coming to the south of france and would like to collect one... please let us know. The Brood XIII, 17-yr. cicada activity in the Chicago area has all but ended. What remains are dead insects all over the ground. Hence, tomorrow (Saturday 7 July) will be the last day of the stream. The National Public Radio affiliate in Chicago did a feature on the stream today. Birds, I suppose. Then, a plane flies across an imagined blue sky. An emergency siren fades in and out to let place to whistling birds. Everything seems in order again. Only irregular klaxons come to disturb it from time to time. This is what could be heard on one of the streams from Marseille, France, on a regular Sunday, through the apparatus set up by the French-based audio art research group Locus Sonus. Open microphones located in different regions of the world broadcast their immediate soundscape. I put Hong Kong onto the global open-microphones map. la mouvance des flux takes its root in these streamed soundscapes, and explores the idea of continuous listening, the complex relationships between flux and sound events. This work proposes to render audible the inaudible and the faraway in ways different from the radio, and to transfer the global streams within a sound field around the listener’s head. Sounds are mixed and intermingled, confusing the perception of background and fore- ground within the composed soundscape. It explores sound as a continuous dynamic stream, where sounds rub and crash against each other, and weave into each other to create new tensions. The experience of time is also a way to alter the nature of the listening activity - are these remote sounds static events, or are they changing by nature?
