Everyday life with a lot of sound animation : a kind of circus. Voices, chlidren, cafe's discussions, neighbours' "cryers" and conversations, cars (with music pulsations), little trucks and motocycles, bells, and each first wednesday of each month the siren (bombers), cicadas, flocks of birds, and sometimes sheeps and goats (the last village's shepherd), village's fountain... Dear Friends, This is a reminder that we Locus Sonus streamers are participating in World Listening Day, on Sunday July 18th. It will be great if you can activate your web-mics on this day, please. So we made this animated map which shows the location of all the streams and indicates those which are currently active with a blinking light. By clicking on a chosen location one can directly listen to the OGG Vorbis stream in a browser. Community of streamers. Another interesting development arising from the fact that we are involving other people to set up the microphones is that we have found ourselves with a network of people - artists, musicians and researchers, who are inherently interested by networked audio. This has led to use of the streams for art forms, outside of the lab itself (SARC in Belfast, Cedric Maridet in Hong-Kong, etc.). Much of our research concerns the emergence of listening practices which are based on the permanence, the non spectacular or non event based quality of the streams. We have found ourselves creating a sort of variation on Cageian (as in John Cage) listening, importing a remote acoustic environment in a way which can be chosen by the user, creates a renewed concentration on the local environment itself. This has led us to reflect on a form which adopts a permanent or semi permanent situation to present the streams publicly, and which involves a relationship between the local and the remote environment. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Locustream Audio Tardis presentation : http://locusonus.org/tardis/ Locustream Audio Tardis is an imaginary journey between various open mikes of the Locustream project, initiated by the Locus Sonus lab. All the sounds that are heard are transmitted live from the distant locations where volunteers taking part in the project have set up microphones which permanently stream their chosen soundscape via the web. By switching from stream to stream the audience hear the cyclical sequence which are successively played for around 7 to 10 mn each. A simple video-image showing the name of the location and of the streamer is projected during each sequence. Locus Sonus http://locusonus.org/ Locus Sonus is a research group specialized in audio art. It is organized as a post graduate lab by the Art Schools of Aix en Provence (ESAA) and Nice (ENSA Villa Arson) in the south of France. We have a partnership with sociology lab CNRS, LAMES Aix en Provence (who are interested by the way that practices related to new technologies are creating modifications in artistic production and the way that the public responds to these modifications), and we currently continue collaborations with the CRESSON, architecture lab CNRS in Grenoble (sonic spaces research centre), the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), and other international partners. Locus Sonus is concerned with the innovative and transdisciplinary nature of audio art forms, in the framework of networked sonic spaces, some of which are experimented and evaluated in a lab type context. An important factor is with the collective or multi-user aspects inherent to many emerging audio practices and which necessitate working as a group. Two main thematic define this research - audio in it's relation to space and networked audio systems. Featuring environmental sounds and snippets of conversation recorded in each location, and combined with her electronically treated vocalizations, the songs represent the spirit of each walk. 20 minutes. _Andrea Polli_ (New Mexico) will present audio excerpts from Sonic Antarctica - a project that features recordings of the Antarctic soundscape made during her seven-week National Science Foundation residency in Antarctica during the 2007/2008 season. Sonic Antarctica features natural and industrial field recordings, sonifications and audifications of science data and interviews with weather and climate scientists. 20 minutes. _Eric Leonardson_ (Chicago, IL) and _Michelle Nagai_ (Princeton, NJ) present a duo of live improvised music played on self-built electronic instruments. Leonardson's "Springboard" is made from inexpensive and readily available materials, producing a miraculous world of sound. Recently, the Springboard was written about in /Leonardo Music Journal/ and Nicolas Collins' book, /Handmade Electronic Music: The Art of Hardware Hacking/ (MIT Press). Michelle Nagai performs on the miniMARtLET, a scaled-down version of her light-sensing, neural network driven tree bark interface. 20 minutes. Callard evokes the experience of life in Muncie, Indiana when the city was busy with industrial commerce. We hear the sounds of freight trains with a musicality all their own, mixed with Canadian Geese flying overhead, and the intimate breathe sounds of a sleeping person. 7 minutes. _Jamie Davis_ (New York and UK) will present Something The City Said, an experimental sound work that is meant to express the musicality of an urban soundscape. Dear Friends, I'm happy to announce that the American Society for Acoustic Ecology <http://www.acousticecology.org/asae/>'s /Listening for the Future/ symposium will take place from Friday, July 9 through Sunday, July 11 in Chicago. Hosted by the ASAE's Midwest chapter and the World Listening Project <http://www.worldlisteingproject.org> this conference is the first of its kind in the United States. Please visit the *Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology website <http://mwsae.org>* for details on how to participate. Event Highlights *Friday, July 9* - /'Citizen Sound'/ symposium (5-7PM) opens with a wine and cheese reception, introductions to each of the *ASAE* chapters, and presentations by leaders in Chicago's cultural and advocacy scene at *Columbia College*, 33 E. Congress Parkway, basement lobby and room # LL11. Featured guests include L*ou Mallozzi*, Executive Director of Experimental Sound Studio <http://www.experimentalsoundstudio.org/> and architect *Graham Balkany* of the Gropius in Chicago Coalition <http://www.savemrh.com/>. A media lounge, where guests can sample CDs and peruse publications by participants, performers and ASAE* *members, will be open all night. Following dinner at a local eatery, we'll be treated to a *concert* (8:30-10:30PM - $10) featuring ASAE member composers, performers and special guests. * Saturday, July 10* - Head "out of town" for an *afternoon soundwalk* (2-4PM) in Miller Woods, <http://www.nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/upload/Miller%20Woods%20test.pdf> at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore <http://www.nps.gov/indu/index.htm>. After the dunes soundwalk, it's back to the city for another group *dinner *(6:30-8:15) followed by a Chicago nightlife soundwalk (8:30-10PM). This day's events should provide plenty of opportunities for informal conversation and networking among members. * Sunday, July 11 *- *ASAE* members lead a *workshop for children* (2-3PM) and families near Gallery 400 <http://www.uic.edu/aa/college/gallery400/>, on the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. ASAE members from New York, San Francisco, the Midwest, Southwest and beyond will present a concert in the *gallery*, 3:30-5:30PM at 400 S. Peoria Street (MC 034). This event will also be streamed live. [locustream] streaming in stereo?

Hello all: Before I found Locustream, I've been streaming the outside sounds from my studio window using a pair of microphones arranged in ORTF on a local Icecast server in stereo, and I still am. However, I've noticed that mono is currently the only option for sending to locustream, and that the menu is disabled. I expect there's a good reason for this, but was just curious to know why this is, and when/if stereo streaming will become an option again? With a good stereo image, the difference between mono and stereo is astronomical. I will most likely have my mic streaming tomorrow. Thanks for such an awesome site.
