Hello all
I've been running a test stream off grid in my backyard (http://locus.creacast.com:9001/stream_demo.mp3) for a few days.
This is along the lines of the temporary streams discussed here already. It adds a small solar power unit.
In case useful, I made some notes:

Thanks

This sounds great Grant. Thanks for sharing your build doc - very useful and inspiring. A

Hi Grant and others, Sounds good, I'll look at your notes. I am also testing an off grid installation with a solar panel and a 4G dongle. What strikes me is that the streambox always seems to sends data. So in my case with a subscription of 5000MB per month, the data will run out. The only solution is a subscription with unlimited data. That's actually a shame, experience with this?

Hi Wijand Ah good - it's great to try this in different ways / places.
The stream at 44100 KHz with a quality setting of 0.6 in the Locus Sonus interface uses around 1GB in 24 hours. So you don't really need unlimited data but you need more than 30GB per month. We really need a sponsor!
Failing that, some people use Sim cards intended for mobile phones, sometimes with amazing deals. But some ISPs block this practice. I'd be interested to know experiences with that.
I also think, but I'm not sure, that the so-called 'stay alive' [ping] function built into eg a Teltonika router or gateway, makes them more reliable over the long term than a standard dongle or mobile WiFi device.

Hello Grant,
This is most helpful, thank you. It’s great to see how everything fits together. One question re the solar set up - are you using a separate dribox for the battery and charge controller or does everything , pi and all, end up in the same box ?
On the subject of wiring the capsules you say:
At the plug, the Right channel + wire goes to the Ring, and the Left channel + wire to the Tip. I bring the negative wires together and connect to the capsule ground and also bring the shields together and connect to the ground / earth of the capsule.
I’m a bit confused here when you say connect to the capsule ground - do you mean the ground of the mini jack plug ? And similarly for the shields ?
Thanks,
Jem

Ah yes - I forgot
If you use the medium size dribox, you can put everything in it, including the battery, charge controller etc. Only the solar panel would be outside.
The 10Ah battery and charge controller don't quite fit in the small dribox.
I like the way the small dribox works with a smaller battery - it's very compact and still quite light - perfect for one-off 'drops' ..
The medium size box is the one I use with bigger soundcards and it would be nice to shriink the whole thing down. On the other hand it has plenty of room for probably 2 or 3 10Ah batteries like the ecoworthy one, so it is quite versatile, and not really that big..
As Udo says, 10Ah won't get you through an extended overcast period; it basically extends the duration of the 'drop' when it's sunny.
For a really long-term installation, especially in Winter / a cloudy zone, you would need a bigger battery. In that case, you might decide to put it in a battery box with the charge controller and go with the streambox in the small dribox or even a smaller enclosure.
As you gather, I haven't quite worked out the best way. Thoughts / tests very welcome (including on environmental impacts of lead acid vs lithium batteries), and if I have any updates, I ll send them along
Thanks very much

Hello Grant,
This is most helpful, thank you. It’s great to see how everything fits together. One question re the solar set up - are you using a separate dribox for the battery and charge controller or does everything , pi and all, end up in the same box ?
On the subject of wiring the capsules you say:
*At the plug, the Right channel + wire goes to the Ring, and the Left channel + wire to the Tip. I bring the negative wires together and connect to the plug ground and also bring the shields together and connect to the ground / earth of the plug.*
I’m a bit confused here when you say connect to the capsule ground - do you mean the ground of the mini jack plug ? And similarly for the shields ?
Thanks,
Jem

Many thanks for this, Grant. This reminds me of something I've been mulling over for awhile: Scheduled streaming. I've been discussing it with Daniel Fishkin, who is working on a solar-powered stream in Virginia, USA. It would be great to have the stream turn off at night.
To really save power in a solar situation, I think we would need an external microcontroller that turns the Pi on/off (along with the 4G hardware). Several off-the-shelf boards exist [1] to deal with power supply switching, LiPo battery charging, etc. The Witty Pi [2] is the most full-featured I've seen: includes a switchmode power supply, battery-backed realtime clock, MOSFETs to control the power to the Pi, and software scripts to communicate over the GPIO pins. Unfortunately the simple installer from the Witty Pi manufacturer doesn't seem to work with the streambox image.
The addition of Codec Zero support in the streambox image really changed the game for me, and I wonder if Locus Sonus would consider adding support for either:
* An option in the web interface for stream start/stop times * Built-in support for a board like the Witty Pi (scheduled startup/shutdown of the Pi)
(Disclaimer: I haven't tried the Witty Pi - just passing on experiences from a friend.)

hi Zach & all, wittypi is nice, I've tested the v3 and mini, shouldn't be complicated to make it work on the locus image. I've checked with the manufacturer in CZ about hardware conflicts between witty and IQAudio, but there are none and it seems to work fine. The wittys have a feature to control input power, eg. shutdown / boot on lower/upper thresholds. Unfortunately both wittys do not work well with powerbanks and pi zero (and also pi2/3). the current is to low to keep the powerbank alive, one would need to increase the power consumption to make it work, but that makes no sense. picture attached: pi zero + wittypi mini + iqaudio zero + DC/DC converter (6-30V to 5V). that unit is ready to run with eg. a 12V car battery, or LiFePo or whatever, and monitors its input power, also temperature, which might be useful when it lives in a closed box.

quick guess: a 12V/10Ah battery can power a pi zero + iqaudio + wifi/dongle for 2-3 days max., you have to prevent discharging. so after a few cloudy days you have to charge the battery. For more reliable setups you'd need more Ah. real world experience appreciated!
A 20000mAh powerbank with real 72Wh capacity powers such a setup for 2 days under ideal conditions, that translates to a 1.5W power consuption, which fits my measurements. If you have a low network signal, power consumption goes up a lot, and operation time goes down. If you're on a nearby wifi, power comsumption is about 0,5W
for a temporary stream on sunny summer days, a special powerbank (eg sunnybag, which allows charging and discharging at the same time) plus a so called solar charger (eg. from Anker, Phaesun etc.) can work for many days. Such a setup fits into the pocket ;)

Hello sound people,
My setup is also running by now on solar energy and a 4G dongel. (connection locally via the wifi of the dongle) I have taken out a subscription with unlimited data and I hope that the provider allows this (fair use policy).
There is currently a lot of wind over here, causing the mics to clip. I have to build better windshields!
The stream is permanently on, depending on how long the solarpanel-battery combination will lasts. (and data :))
My calculation gives a good result for the period from March to October.
The stream can be find here: http://locus.creacast.com:9001/zwolle_sonic_heartbeat.ogg http://locus.creacast.com:9001/zwolle_sonic_heartbeat.ogg

hi Wijnand, which battery/panel/charger do you use? sorry if I missed that information. Sounds nice, but at the moment there is an electrical noise audible. Sounds to me as if you use Primo 172/272? You can try to move the mic cables and/or wifi hotspot, that has helped often in my setups with these mics. Or use AOM5024, they work better with the Pi Zero. bests, Udo

Hello,
I am planning to set up a solar recording/streaming Raspberry Pi.
I found Grant's document to be helpful - https://paper.dropbox.com/doc/Streambox-Off-grid-with-IQ-Audio-Code-Zero-and.... I appreciated seeing Wijnand Bredewold's pictures of his setup from July 18 posting. It gave me some ideas for making the setup compact.
I noticed there was nothing in Grant's document about power management, but maybe I overlooked it.
I was wondering what people's experiences are with the PiJuice or other alternatives? It seems that the PiJuice only works up to 10-12 ah and is currently out of stock, so perhaps there are other solutions at this time? https://uk.pi-supply.com/products/pijuice-standard
I would like to use it with an audio interface connected to the Pi so that I can use phantom powered mics for high sensitivity and no EMI noise. Grant has suggested the Focusrite 2nd Gen 2i2. I suppose there are other interfaces too that will work provided they don't require a manual button to turn on power. I am wondering how much additional power draw I have to account for with the interface? Has anyone tried the Focusrite or others in a Solar power rig?
Cheers darren
Hi Darren
If you want to run the stream long term over the Winter, running 24 hours a day, you need to plan for a quite big battery (around 60 - 80Ah) and a big collector (around 200W).
The power management is handled by the charge controller, which will shut the load off if the battery discharges to a certain voltage and turn it back on when it re-charges to a certain point.
The Focusrite 2nd Gen 2i2 is hard to get hold of, although second hand ones show up.. The Native Instruments Komplete Audio 2 is a good alternative, which to me sounds better than the Focusrite (itself v good imo).
Notes on the 48V setup, including the Simple P48 Mod are here: https://paper.dropbox.com/doc/Streambox-with-Focusrite-Soundcard--BQK_MjSW7I...
I'd be happy to discuss in more detail.
Sounds like a great project!

I'm running a Pi (streaming video however, rather than audio) with a 100W solar panel and a 70Ah battery. I need to keep an eye on it as the days shorten and the weather deteriorates! I use a 12V to 5V 3A step down to power the Pi (eg https://ebay.us/orju6a) and a Witty Pi 3 pi hat ( https://www.uugear.com/product/witty-pi-3-realtime-clock-and-power-managemen...) so I can safely switch the pi on and off without having to log in. I can also use it to time start up and turning off, which probably not so important on an audio stream but means I can switch off the pi at night for my video stream. You can also use an external switch - I'm in the process of building a little light sensor so it turns on and off autmatically with the daylight.
I run a small 4G wifi modem straight from a USB port on the solar charge controller.
The whole lot can sit in this plastic trunk - https://www.diy.com/departments/form-skyda-black-49l-plastic-storage-trunk/3...
