Hello,
Congratulations to all for making Reveil 2021 happen.
I was thrilled to finally have a pretty good quality stream box I could leave in woodland. My one disappointment was that having hooked up a recorder to the headphone output of the 2i2 I found I had nothing but 13 hours of static.
Great if you like that kind of thing but I was hoping for a bit of birdsong.
I found out two things subsequently:
1. That I'd knocked a switch and turned monitoring off . . . hence no sound. 2. That the output is mono. I’ve been trying to figure out why because I’d like to record in stereo.
I tested the 2i2 with my computer and the headphone jack outputs in stereo, so no faults there. Tested all cables etc, no faults there either. I’ve looked in the settings and configuration for the streambox and can see nothing to change that will flip the headphone output to stereo. The steam itself is stereo, no problems there.
Has anyone experienced this, or know how to fix it ?
Thanks,
Jem
Jem: I'm pretty sure the gen2 version of the 2i2 does direct monitoring in mono only. (This is a 'feature" for home studio multi-track since you want to hear your guitar in both ears while laying down those hot riffs.) I think the gen3 has a stereo/mono switch for the direct feed, but I seem to remember somebody on this list recommending against the gen3 for other reasons?
Perhaps you can configure something on the software side to connect the inputs to the outputs? Sorry, I have no expertise there.
-Zach
Thanks Zach,
I hooked it up to a Mac running Logic Pro. Definitely monitoring in stereo. I could pan things !
Manual says it’s stereo too.
Somewhere there must be a setting. ALSA ?

Yup, but we're talking about direct input monitoring, not the output from the software. (If you can pan things in Logic then it sounds like you're using Logic's software monitoring to play through, which is different than direct monitoring. The direct monitor is for avoiding the latency incurred by the software during multi-track overdubs. It's a direct analog signal path from in-out bypassing the computer, so usually there's nothing to configure in software.)
I don't have a gen2 now but I've used one at work and direct monitoring was mono for me. But hopefully I'm wrong because it would make things a lot simper for u if it could be switched to stereo!

OK, I see . . . might be a problem. I hope there is a fix somewhere in the software then.

No, you're not wrong. The Gen1 and gen2 2I2's direct monitor is, in fact, mono only.
You don't get a mono/stereo switch until the 2I4.
Interestingly, the Behringer UMC-202 HD has the opposite problem. It's stereo only. No mono/stereo switch on either of them for direct monitoring.
I have no experience with the gen3 Scarlet stuff.

I have both a UMC202 HD and a UMC 204 HD. For streaming purposes, it's pretty well identical, except the 204 HD has two more outputs and inserts on the inputs, plus the mono/stereo switch.

Should do. The preamps are comparable.
The self-noise might actually be a little less with the Behringer interfaces, at least when compared to the second generation scarlets.
For years, I used a pair of UMC interfaces with dynamic microphones, which, of course, are far less sensitive than condensers, and didn't have too much to complain about.

Hi all Soz to be slow The Focusrite 2i2 2nd Gen has a mono headphone monitor.
The newer 3rd Gen has stereo headphone monitor and some other improvements, but it requires a button press to turn on Phantom power on restart - so not useful for long term streaming
The Native Instrumerns Komplete Audio 2 has stereo monitoring and possibly better preamps than the Focusrite. 48V bias button stays depressed. Also smaller, lighter and cheaper. I really like it

I agree about the NI Komplete preamps. They're very nice, unlike the first generation Komplete Audio 6, which didn't have enough gain and leaked phantom power even when it was turned off. These preamps are also a little better than the Behringer Midas Designed ones, which are used in the UMC range starting from the 202.

Use another class-compliant audio interface, or software-based monitoring, I guess...
When my two streams were up, I used Liquidsoap, which is more complex to set up than Darkice, but it allowed an easy path to pipe the source audio through a processing chain (or not) to an audio output.
