IDEOLOGIES AND ETHICS IN THE USES AND ABUSES OF SOUND Koli, Finland, June 16-19, 2010
CALL FOR PAPERS (reminder: abstracts by October 12)
The 2010 WFAE conference will be held at Koli in Eastern Finland. Koli is a plausible site for reflecting upon ideologies, ethics and soundscapes, since it was amongst the key places of the national romantic artist pilgrims in the late 19th century Finland. The main organisers, Department of Finnish Language and Cultural Research at the University of Joensuu, Finland and The Finnish Society for Acoustic Ecology (FSAE) invite researchers and artists from all disciplines to join this forum of discussion.
Confirmed invited and keynote speakers are (in alphabetical order): Steven Feld, Charles Hirschkind, Bruce Johnson, Anahid Kassabian, Andra McCartney, R. Murray Schafer, Barry Truax and Hildegard Westerkamp.
More information at: http://www.joensuu.fi/soundscapes
Proposals are invited for papers, workshops, roundtable, or artistic contributions relating to, but not limited to the following topics:
NATIONS, NATIONALISM AND SOUNDSCAPE There has been an abundance of research on the topic of nationalism and music. What about nationalism and soundscape? Within sound of religious movements Martin Stokes mentioned recently that in order to understand certain Islamic movements today it would be crucial to understand their soundscapes. Collective listening or giving ?voices? to subjects and their religious experiences, are some examples.
CONSTRUCTING PAST AND PROGRESS IN THE USES AND ABUSES OF SOUND Both past and progress can be used and abused as part of many ideologies. Have past soundscapes been used as a resource as part of these negotiations? The ideology of progress, then, is intimately related to the acceptance of noise as an inevitable phenomenon.
ETHICAL CHALLENGES OF WORKING WITH THE SOUNDS How do soundscape researchers and artists answer to the ethical challenges of working with the sounds of other people ? and of themselves. How do we understand cultural convergences, differences and sameness? Or would it just be more important to learn to tolerate the other? Should the researcher or artist make an intervention -- or would it be best just to observe the uses and abuses of sounds from outside?
THE COMMODIFICATION OF AURAL SPACE, SOUND AND SILENCE How does silence, its commodification and tourism fit under the same sky? What kind of strategies can the citizens and planners develop in different localities in order to guarantee the soundscape comfort, tourism as a means of livelihood and the touristic search of silence all at the same time? What about the urban environment with its ubiquitous transphonic phenomena? Who has the right to fill the urban space with music, and how is it currently happening?
Please send ABSTRACTS (max. 400 words) by October 12, 2009 to the conference e-mail address koli@akueko.com. The abstracts are being dealt with in early November, and the people whose papers and sonic art works are chosen to be presented will be notified on November 10.

Hello,
Right now, the new Locustream SoundMap (version 2.0) is ready and publicly released on our website. http://locusonus.org/soundmap/
We have installed a series of new features and updated existing ones : - google-maps-based with zoom, drag and map types options & controls - options menu access : the 'wheel' icon (above right) - full-window : the 'rectangle-arrow' icon - refresh the map : the 'curved arrow' icon - full automation with our streaming server - update of the account registration and maintenance ('admin' link) etc.
The soundmap is now in test, so you can navigate on it Thanks to send your comments to the list in order to improve this new soundmap
Concerning your account ('admin' link on the red menu) : Because we can now zoom in, we can access to the precise location of your microphone on the interface (with the 'satellite' preset option available on the options menu : while clicking the 'wheel' icon above right). This requests you must adjust this location starting from your account page. The easier way is to drag your microphone icon after zooming in the preview map you find on your account page (below). This way is very useful and efficient. The second way is to type your exact postal address in the 'Localization' paragraph, but this second way seems less reliable. Thanks for typing the name of your country in the requested field (same paragraph) if it's not already automatically done by the system. This feature is used by our on-line Tardis system.
If you've got problem to access to your account (if you've forgot your login/psw), contact me.
At the same time, you can update the informations and the pictures of your streaming microphone system.

News - Ongoing stream installations : Chicago - Eric Leonardson Montreal - Max and Julian Stein Chicago - Chad Clark Ann Arbor - John Kannenberg Belfast - Pedro Rebelo Bournemouth - Alain Renaud Lagos - Emeka Ogboh Barcelona - Le Hangar Lijiang - Rhizome Art Center Yogyakarta - The Fibers etc.
Other streams are intermittent (in Paris, New York, Marseilles, Vesinet, etc.) or currently down because of a streambox breakdown (Quebec, Hong Kong, Dakar). The streambox with our embedded LocusMic (tiny electret microphone) is always in a prototype phase. We have distributed a first series of streamboxes to streamers (webmikers) who were ok to work with us for testing it and improving the system. A second series will be available next month. We remind you that the installation of a streambox on your stream location permits to keep stable the network of microphones and thus to favour the development of projects (installations and so on) based on Locustream live streams.

Hi Jerome,
This new map is very nice!
I can't remember my login or password. Can you tell me what they are?
thanks,
chad

what kind of reading problem have you got ? slowness, crashing ? I tested it on various configs without problem the lonely disadvantage is to wait a little and validate the applet certificate ...
u should consider add a link for direct stream
the streams are in ogg sound format. So the internaut can click the link and open his/her own player (VLC for instance), or in copying/ pasting the url to the player.
or a javascript based player is more universal
I didn't find a javascript based player for ogg streams ...
With the Java applet, the internaut must accept the certificate before playing the sound
thats, all. thanks for ur great work

but we can use a Flash based player ? regard : http://barelyfocused.net/blog/2008/10/03/flash-vorbis-player/ The demo at http://people.xiph.org/~arek/pg/hx/test.html work for me and it seems to be open-source-code, at least sources could be downloaded.
But it's Flash :( and the last version is required
A great find ! I think it would be no difficult to implement this player within our systems ...
Can everybody test this player with different configs (OS, various flash versions, ...), please ? If the tests are conclusive and ok, we will include this player ...

Hello
All the information and guidelines on the account page are now updated and correspond to this 2.0 version of the SoundMap. I hope the explanations are clearer than before and that you will find now more details about how to manage your account and stream.
You can find now and directly your stream-name you must type in your patch and the url of your stream
Hope that helps

Hello, The new map looks great!
My only suggestion is to group locations in a city when zoomed out. For example, in Chicago, while there are three streams set up, the only one that is accessible when zoomed out is the Wicker Park stream. When a user clicks on a marker from a city with more than one stream, I think there should be a clustered info window that pops up with the names of the different streams in that city (each linked to their marker)... then when zoomed in close enough that the markers for different streams are visible they should un-clustered. There is an extension for google maps called ClusterMarker that can do this http://googlemapsapi.martinpearman.co.uk/readarticle.php?article_id=3.

If each stream is precisely located (it's not currently the case), we don't have this problem, because when you zoom in, the locations are well differentiated. But you're right when one zooms out ....

http://locusonus.org/index.php?page=biennalelyon
Until October the 3rd, Locus Sonus presents the open microphones of the Locustream project, in Lyon (Biennale de Lyon, a big collective exhibition in France). Invited by a collective of young curators, and according to the constraints of this special show, we present a series of photographs of the microphones' locations, accompanied with the listening of a recorded sound sequence of the streams. This selection of 15 pairs of photographs offers an unusual approach of the whole project, like a kind of documentation set. This opportunity involves to show the collective and hidden aspects of the Locustream project. On the page http://locusonus.org/index.php?page=biennalelyon , you can find informations and diaporamas of this current presentation.

Hello again,
We will show the Locustream Audio Tardis project (http:// locusonus.org/tardis/) in Strasbourg from the 25th of September to October the 3rd. The Ososphere Festival in Strasbourg proposes to show the project in a convivial place : a lounge bar. The Tardis system is fully on-line and the process reads live, continuously and automatically the available streams (3-mn each). Each presentation of the Tardis permits to open a listening room with loudspeakers, headphones and video-projection (the on-line interface : black screen with local time, streamname, location, country and streamer's name), where the audience can listen to the microphones while sitting down or lying down in this room.
We hope listen to all your streams along this period (25 Sept - 3 Oct)
I'm available these next days to help you in finalizing your microphone and stream installation. While looking at the soundmap, we can hope around 20 streams for this session. Thanks for maintaining 'alive' your microphone, please.
Best Jerome
Hi Jerome,
I will have my stream up ... from my house. The only issue is that I haven't been able to get rid of that buzz from the box. Any idea?
Cheers,

Another tip is to keep your mini jack extension cable as short and as good a quality as possible. (I've just been struggling with the same problem here in Lijiang, and the cable was responsable for most of the noise).

Completely agree with you. I test the same thing here past week. And that's the reason because I'll move my microphone and streambox on a better site here these next days before the 25th. It's better to have a long ethernet cable and a short audio cable, than the reverse. So by moving the streambox's site without modifying the microphone's localisation and your DSL connection access, that can solve this kind of problem.

Hello,
I tried to repair the CF card from the box with fsck command. It repaired as it should on the terminal, however, I still have the same error at start up of the box after a few screens:
"sbin/init: error while loading shared librairies: libsepol.so.1 : cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory [11.277598] kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init!"
then it stucks there....
any lead on how to fix the problem?
Thanks.
Cheers,
Cedric

thats a complete different error, seems like the box was modified deeply since theres is a missing library as the error tells.. do you have a second CF card or just the corrupt one?
perhaps we can send you a fresh CF card with a fresh system.

Yes,
It seems all strange, as I didn't touch the card. I only have this card. Is is it possible that you send me the files on the internet for me to install on a new card I could buy (or format this one) to get a fresh new install, or it is too complicated and you will have to send a new card?
thanks.

well the way to go could be to have the CF image on a server but is like a 3gig file, perhaps peter or jerome can serve it or upload it somewhere, else as soon as i get more CF cards i can make a copy and ship one to you home. (in a few weeks time)
