I found this today and it reminded me of locus sonus work.
Anyone want to work in a filtering system that would allow you to convolve any stream with the impulse responses from a location in echo thief?
On another note, I've got a new place now and can mount whatever I like, which means I can be back in business with a stream from Oakland, USA (somewhat soon).
I just need a mic I can put outside and set up on my roof.
Are there any recommendations for an outdoor mic?
thanks, best -august.

Hiya,
Glad to see you back again in the loop I'll have a look at the echothief project
It's good to be (soon) back in the loop.
I'm looking at this project here and wondering if I should just build a simple raspberry pi on solar:
http://www.polyideas.com/blog/2013/7/10/solar-powered-raspberry-pi or http://pi.qcontinuum.com/
Anyone here have success with something like that?
I still have the old box with the little mic capsule. Would that mic also work on the raspberry pi's audio interface? any thoughts on the quality?
-august.
Hi August
Yes - it will be great to hear from the Oakland stream again.
This might be a good time to talk about Pi's:
We have been working on Pi streaming and now have 2 stable and good approaches:
1. Mono over ethernet using Raspberry Pi Version B, Icicle from Blue Microphones and XLR microphone.
2. Stereo over wifi using Pi Version B, Edimax Wifi Adapter, Griffin iMic and stereo electret condenser microphones [mono would also work].
Both these approaches require minimal setup and are designed for long term trouble-free operation.
We can help with setup and/or send you a free pre-configured SD Card with everything you need on it.
Happy to discuss in more detail.
We are working towards an event and 24 hour broadcast over 3-4 MAY, so would very much like to reactivate old streams and get new ones going. More on this project in a recent article for The Field Reporter

I just so happen to have a griffin iMic laying around. Maybe I will just try that out with the old box.
Any suggestions for a mic?
-august.
I tried the Griffin iMic, and found it to be incredibly noisy, eeven as a line input device, before applying any real gain. We're talking noise floors close to the 8-bit dynamic range here. Add to that the potential for issues if you're on the power grid with a pair of unbalanced electrets. Unfortunately, I don't really know of anything awesome that is as simple to setup and use. Andrea Electronics makes a stereo input dongle. I wonder if it might be a better alternative than the iMic. I don't have one to try, myself.
I'm going to pick up a couple of pies soon, so I would be interested in disk images/any configuration help, as I have never actually had my stream on the map despite running one for four years, mostly out of laziness. I should really do something about that. I would be using a Behringer UCA-222 audio interface lined into a set of outputs on my MG102C mixer, which has a pair of dynamic mics on it. Not a particularly compact setup, but it's proven to be very reliable, and can withstand rain, snow, etc. with almost direct exposure.

Hi Patrick
// It would be great to have your stream on the map. We are working on linking to it. Either that or you could set up an account at Locus Sonus and take your stream there. You can always then link to it from another site with an embedded player..
// We are finding the new iMics to be quite low noise. I have an old one which is not so useful because it does not permit gain adjustment via the Pi. Even it is ok. Maybe the iMic you're using is not working right? I tried the Andrea usb soundcard from Sound Professionals. It requires windows or mac drivers, so is not useable with the Raspberry Pi. It includes noise cancelling circuitry etc which I suspect was a problem. The result was sort of muddy. I'm returning it. Both iMic and Icicle give much better results.
// Check out Peter's stream now with the Pi form Niolon: sounding great I think.
// Grab a couple of Pi's and happy to help.

I have/had an account on Locus Sonus, but I don't remember any of the creds for it. I set it up in 2010 hoping to use Puredata on Windows, got it half-way set up, and then something dumb happened (can't remember what now,) and that was never finished.
Interesting about the iMic. I don't actually know how old the one I have here is, but it's definitely anything but quiet. The absolute best floor I can achieve at mic level is somewhere around -55DB (about the same as a cassette tape,) and that's with a terminated connection, nothing else adding noise, and at a low gain. The noise I get is pure hiss, nothing from the front-side bus. output is perfectly fine, but not relevant in this case.
Also, what mics are people using with the Blue XLR preamp?

I have an old iMic (it's silver..), which doesn't work well because you can't adjust the gain on it, unlike with the new ones. But can't hurt to try. Let us know how you get on..
You can use stereo elecret condensers. I have been testing with a pair of stereo omnis (binaurals), which work fine. The best option is likely to be based on the EM-172 capsules from Primo - as recommended by Udo Noll et al eg here. You can order 10 from the manufacturer or in kit form eg from felmicamps.. They cost around €7. We're looking at making some up.
