Hi all,
Thx for the great event I was nice to listen It sounded fantastic !
Success for next REVEIL ( or other moment )
Grtz,

Hello friends
I echo Ward's sentiments. Running a livestream is full of challenges and battles. I am also grateful for everyone's perseverance and dedication to detail.
I am curious to hear more about the physical and environmental challenges that contributors faced and what solutions were made in the moment. A lot of discussion on the list is devoted to the technical side of doing the streams (for good reason) but what about those aspects?
Cheers
Darren

I have hidden my box in a wooden fence in a Berlin inner city forest. Last night evil mice were gnawing on the cable and trying to break into the box, during the day, nasty birds discovered the microphones and were plucking fake fur from the wind screen, probably for their nests. ;-) Udo
Hi Darren, That's a good direction you are taking the discussion with that question. I can't talk about the same type of challenges as Udo because since I first heard about Reveil in 2019 I only stream occasionally couple of times per year and with a temporary set-up with a recorder, a laptop and a hotspot created by my iphone. So I'm always there and this is not really a full-time streaming solution. This fits my preferences better and I generally feel more involved if I am there and can listen while recording or streaming. It comes with some other drawbacks and challenges. The main drawback is that I will always affect the surroundings by my presence but I feel I am getting better at not interfering as a week ago (when I was testing a new set-up for Reveil) I was surrounded at one moment by at least 4 or 5 mice running around in leaves taking care of their business and not bothered by me sitting about a meter away from them. A challenge was that I had to get up at 3 AM and drive to the nature reserve and walk into a pitch dark forest - more of a thing to fight in my own head. Also, that's a bit of a self-imposed challenge caused by me picking this location for the stream. Since I was with my laptop, it was a bit of an issue when it started to rain. The Blimp with my mic can take a bit of rain but the laptop not that much. And I had to make sure not to keep my phone too close to the recorder as the interference could be heard even though I was convinced the gear is properly shielded. Those are all things worth considering when streaming in this way. Tomasz

Hi Tomasz
Good point about the phone noise leaking in. I noticed that too when I was using it as a hotspot for Raspberry Pi. I also got ground hum on the PI when it was plugged into the WIFI router through an Ethernet cable. In the end, I used a laptop with ethernet connection and it was clean and as stable as it can be with Satellite internet. A large plastic box with a lid that has flaps would be good for your laptop.
Cheers
Darren

You should not have used your lunchbox, Udo ;:—)

Hi Udo
That's too bad. It can happen. I have had some close calls but nothing to that extent.
I have been running a setup that is for recording only but the same setup could be used for streaming too. The setup has been running off and on since Feb 2019 and everyday 24/7 since March 16 2021.
I might have been fortunate because I am on site twice a day to change batteries and about once or twice a week I move my setup to a different location on the same property.
However, I have had to repair the very thin lav mic cables that come with the DPA 4060 on two occasions. But it is not clear to me whether they got pinched around small trees and branches (my fault) or eaten by animals.
The main thing I have learned is to keep the cables hidden as much as possible. I use a flexible tubing with a slit down the center that allows me to hide the cable in the areas where it would be exposed. My setup is also fairly large and is on a mic stand. Perhaps with it not being attached to the tree has minimized the animal contact, because there are not many places for them to climb without toppling over.
Here is a picture of my setup: - https://www.darrencopeland.net/web2/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/absentlistene...
And, for those interested, more background on my project: https://www.darrencopeland.net/web2/?page_id=543
Cheers
