Since many of us are in the northern hemisphere and it's beginning to get quite cold. I can't have my streambox outside because the opened window, even if it's tiny crack, lets too much cold air into the house.
If you are in the same situation, I wonder, how have you placed your Locustream mic to pick up outdoor sounds without having the window open and freezing inside?
I am hesitant to drill a special hole through the wall in the room where the streambox box is located. I haven't yet found the time to install an extra long network cable from the router through the wall, leading it to a place where the cable can pass to the exterior of the house.
Being outside also means that exposure to extreme cold, water and ice, and dust could have a negative effect on the operation of the streambox. I suppose this will be a part of the experiment.
All the best, Eric

Look at the pictures of my installation on the soundmap (my stream : nice_mouans) Mu microphone is out a window with an audio cable that is wedged under the closing of the window. But of course I don't have any issue or problem with insulation because the climate is mild here. But I hesitated to drill a hole into the wood with adding a insulating material (for instance rubber). I think it's possible to find a simple insulation solution for the hole. My microphone is fixed outside with a hook in the wood of the window in an upper position in order to be protected from the rain and the wind. The audio cable runs to the streambox and I have a long ethernet cable to the DSL modem (15m).

we don't provide a down jacket for the streambox ;-)

Hi Jerome,
I looked at your stream but only one picture showed up, maybe due to heavy net traffic, I guess.
I used to work as a handyman, so I'll figure something out. It's just a matter of time. Whatever solution I find, I'll try to document it for the stream's slide show.
The temperature in Chicago is now 43ºF/ 9ºC. By January it can get as low -20ºF/-29ºC. When the wind starts blowing it really gets intense.
All the best, Eric

Eric, Another part of the experiment may be using your closed window as transducer.. like a pzm microphone .. here is a project of a laser microphone that looks interesting.. http://www.williamson-labs.com/laser-mic.htm
a video http://lifehacker.com/292718/build-a-laser-spy-microphone-on-the-cheap
and here a diy pzm microphone http://www.uwm.edu/~type/audio-reports/BoundaryMicExperiments/L2_PZM_Rig/L2_...

Hi all
The Reykjavik stream has just had a refresh. Microphone now placed outside, facing the street. Running an old streambox but with a new flash-card. Seems to be working smoothly. How the microphone and windscreen will fare during the Icelandic winter remains to be seen though.
Best, r.
