hi Jerome & all, just an idea, maybe you've discussed it already: are there any plans to provide the possibility to connect temporary streams to the locusonus map? (e.g. by streaming clients like nicecast, oddcast or just a source stream from an icecast2 server) this maybe could make the map more ... alive. guess it shouldn't be difficult. best, udo -- radio aporee 52° 29' 66" N, 13° 25' 26" E ::: maps http://aporee.org/maps/ ::: stream http://radio.aporee.org
hi udo
good question.
My two cents :
In fact the Locustream Soundmap is one of the "interfaces" we're using or used by systems developed by us or by other artists and researchers. These systems are using scripts that continuously scan the Locustream Icecast server in order to play available streams (open microphones). Thus streams of these microphones can feed various systems at the same time, for instance : - Locustream SoundMap (available on the web) - Locustream Tardis (available on the web) - Locustream i-Map (available on mobile devices) - Locustream Promenade (sound and listening installations in physical space, when the project is shown in festivals, exhibitions and so on) - etc. and, for instance, the present project by Ragnar in Reikjavik, Daybreak [Forever] : a listening installation at Reykjavik Art Museum.
So this requires to use the same routines (PHP scripts) in order to play all the available (Locus)streams and to play with streams configured specially for the project and its conditions (open microphones).
With your proposition, I understand people and streamers didn't have to use the LocustreamBox and our patches, and can decide to assign their stream, whatever the config and server they use, to the Locustream project and to populate the SoundMap. This could require for instance a special form a streamer can fill up online by notifying the url of his/her stream (and with other information of location, etc.), in order that the Locustream Icecast server relays that stream to the SoundMap (I dont know exactly that relay routine, but I guess it's feasable). Of course this could be possible... and the availability of mobile streams could be exciting (ie. streams you can easily open and send to the project, when you're traveling and when you see a good opportunity : soundscapes, sound events, etc., before back home ;-)
But the use of our Locustream Pd patch (or better the stand-alone app we built sometimes ago : the Locus Streamer app, available on osX, but Win and Linux versions could be not difficult to develop) already answers to that : you can easily install it and play from your computer and send your stream to the Locus Icecast server (after filling the form on our website for the stream localization) ; thus the stream will be automatically recognized by the SoundMap and other Locustream running systems. We could easily imagine the development of LocustreamPhone app too (combined with GPS features), in order to use mobile streams on the field.
Our main problem today is the stability of the project (concerning stable and continuous streams) and the way to maintain the streams alive. We delivered more than 30/40 LocustreamBoxes but until today they never be up all together at the same time...
By the way, we're updating the SoundMap right now and the new version will be online very soon.
Go on this discussion...

yes it is a major problem when you try to collaborative / dispatched live streaming network all over the place. We got the same problem with apo33 & all the different streaming projects we have. There is an issue of how users/participants could be able to maintain a minimum the machine... . In the case of locustream people should just be able to maintain a direct mic stream, in our case they need to maintain a all online lab / series of pd patch and accessible machine outside of their local network.
is Pd relevant for locustream? Have you thought about a python script to control ices and use the technique in a more simple way? For exemple the process of compression is probably too heavy for PD from my experience, in the poulpe project http://poulpe.apo33.org we used ices_cream, a script using ices in jackd. I think it was more stable than when we use stream in PD...
well need to be test for sure...

i can understand. had one failure of the box so far, it was only to fix with sufficient linux knowledge.
ices_cream, a script using ices in jackd. I think it was more stable than when we use stream in PD...
i've ices running for years now, with re-encoding on the fly, it's rock solid. will try to hook that up to the map for a test. that would at least give the opportunity to have a temp stream running. of course along with an update of the location on the map.

kristian paul from colombia streams using darkice.. the latest streambox incudes gstreamer.. so is possible to script all that.. even with pd is possible using the -nogui option.
excuse the quick email!
