hi all
a quick note to confirm other people's experiences, based on udo's recipe, in case useful:
for me the Pi Zero WH - the version with pre soldered header and wifi - and the IQAudio codec zero https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/iqaudio-codec-zero work perfectly out of the box with the latest disk image from Stef @LS Dev This is the one called: unstable version 4.0-dev http://locusonus.org/streambox/
For me it is in fact stable with dns and wifi issues resolved and the sound is remarkable from this card with the PUI capsules: https://eu.mouser.com/datasheet/2/334/AOM-5024L-HD-R-1219369.pdf Sounds clean and good running with a mains adaptor or a battery
best wishes grant
Hi Grant,
This sounds good. Have you tested it with a 4G dongle ? I am interested to know whether there are interference issues.
Thanks,
Jem

hi Jem, Grant & all,
I've tried with 4G dongle, 4G Wifi hotspot as dongle (via OTG cable) or via wifi. I found it difficult with Primo EM272 microphones, very sensitive to noise. I've spent many hours to find the best solution. In short: use the cheapest angled plastic 3,5mm plug you can find, not the high quality neutrik ones, and no straight ones. It's odd, I know. Primo EM172 (disontinued) are a bit better, but not good. Meanwhile, I'm using AOM5024 capsules, cheap, quiet and very sensitive to sound, not electric noise. At least the lastest 100+ stream logs here are made with this combination (pi zero / IQaudio zero / AOM5024) https://aporee.org/fieldradio Udo

nothing special here. This one for example uses a 5m long standard diode cable 2x0.15mm http://locus.creacast.com:9001/brno_luzanky.mp3 this mic is pretty exposed to weather, on a roof... it has withstand quite a lot of rain and storms already. My wind & weather shield seems to work ok ;)

Just a quick note to confirm that I tried the setup that Grant and Udo described. (Pi Zero WH + IQAudio CodecZero + streambox unstable version 4.0-dev). The streambox image is amazing. They even brought the relevant ALSA Mixer gains into the web UI with routing presets for the onboard MEMS mic, stereo electret, and aux input.
Everything worked EXCEPT I needed to restart the streambox after selecting my inputs in the UI. I lost an hour in ALSA Mixer trying to figure out why my signal was mono instead of stereo after switching from the default MEMS mic to stereo electrets. There's a cryptic note on page 15 of the "IQAudio Product Brief" pdf that hints at this, but it may be a good thing to add to the web UI too?
Also, There are HPF and compression (ALC) settings buried in the mixer that may be handy for keeping levels in check on unattended streams. Haven't spent time with it but I'm excited.
Thanks to all involved with this. It feels like a real turning point to have cheap hardware and great software working together so well.

Hi everybody,
I've just installed Pi Zero WH + IQAudio CodecZero + streambox unstable version 4.0-dev with 2 primo EM172 mics. Its indeed amazing (ALSA Mixer gains) and you dont need a expensive separate soundrecorder etc.
Look for the live stream here: https://locus.creacast.com:9443/zwolle_sonic_heartbeat.ogg https://locus.creacast.com:9443/zwolle_sonic_heartbeat.ogg
The next step is to place the installation at a distance of about 200m behind my house. (quieter, further from traffic)
The problem to overcome is setting up a wifi connection over this distance with the raspberry pi zero. Anyone experience with this?

Hi Wijnand,
that was a beautiful stream yesterday! Cool to have such a simple setup do this.
Me and some friends from Rural Development are wondering which configuration might work with a modem, so that it can be placed out of reach from any wifi. Would it work with the Pi Zero WH + IQAudio CodecZero + streambox unstable version 4.0-dev ? Any experience out there?
Thanx!
Greetings, Golo

It feels like a real turning point to have cheap hardware and great software working together so well.

a quick note to confirm other people's experiences, based on udo's recipe, in case useful:
for me the Pi Zero WH - the version with pre soldered header and wifi - and the IQAudio codec zero https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/iqaudio-codec-zero work perfectly out of the box with the latest disk image from Stef @LS Dev This is the one called: unstable version 4.0-dev http://locusonus.org/streambox/

Hi Golo,
It should work with a 4g modem, i have no experiance with that. I'm also interested in a solution with a 4g modem. I think Udo have some experiance with that!
@Udo: can you help?

Hi Wijnand,
that was a beautiful stream yesterday!
Thanx!

Hi everybody,
I've just installed Pi Zero WH + IQAudio CodecZero + streambox unstable version 4.0-dev with 2 primo EM172 mics. Its indeed amazing (ALSA Mixer gains) and you dont need a expensive separate soundrecorder etc.
Look for the live stream here: https://locus.creacast.com:9443/zwolle_sonic_heartbeat.ogg
The next step is to place the installation at a distance of about 200m behind my house. (quieter, further from traffic)
The problem to overcome is setting up a wifi connection over this distance with the raspberry pi zero. Anyone experience with this?

hi Golo & Wijnand
I don't use the streambox images, but rather use my own, based on Raspberry Pi OS (debian), so can't tell for that. But if you use a mobile Wifi/4G hotspot, then it's wifi... and should work out of the box.
I've tested Huawei surfsticks and mobile Wifi routers, they work nicely with 3/4G. I'm using my mobilemics all the time, sometimes up to 10 units, with eg. Huawei E5576-320 both as wifi hotspot and/or modem (via OTG cable). Works fine.
bests, Udo

Hi Udo
I don't use the streambox images, but rather use my own, based on Raspberry Pi OS (debian), so can't tell for that.
So what are you using for the streaming then, darkice of the pd-patches? Or maybe something better? Maybe it was already on this list but the primo EM172’s are replaced by primo EM272’s, are they the same?
But if you use a mobile Wifi/4G hotspot, then it's wifi... and should work out of the box. I've tested Huawei surfsticks and mobile Wifi routers, they work nicely with 3/4G. Wow thanks! G
Thanks for the reply Udo. I think i will use indeed a phone, its the easiest way.
