hi there, received my raspberry pi today, installed a raspbian linux, openvpn and compiled darkice, connected a little wifi adaptor and plugged in an olympus ls5 in class audio mode. a first test was quite sucessful. it streams crispy 128k stereo mp3 from the olympus over a private vpn to liquidsoap on aporee.org. cpu on the raspi is 50% ... i've expected way more quirks, this is quite promising. will do more extended test the next days. if can get my 3G/UMTS usb stick to work, that would be indeed perfect, wifi, 3G, lan, stereo audio in, etc., all in this little box, nice. just wanted to let you know, in case someone has a similar plan. bests, udo
I don't have an Olympus LS5, but I know a lot of their recorders were plagued with weird aliasing issues as a composite-class audio device. Even their flagship professional recorder, the LS100, has this problem, though my little LS14 and even smaller DM520 don't. Good to know this is fixed with the LS5 as well. Are you using it's built-in microphones?
Perhaps I will integrate a raspberry pi into my existing setup at some point, replacing this old Pentium III from 1999 that I am using to stream at the moment, using a Behringer UCA-222 USB audio interface from the output of a Yamaha MG102C mixer.

yes, and sometimes others too like OKM, DPA4060, AT8022 to. I've used the class audio mode often with the LS5, along with a eeepc for mobile streaming. that always worked fine, for hours. if i find my old zoom H2, i'll give hat a try, also a Behringer Xenyx 302USB, but then i'll probably need an usb hub with power supply. playtime...

nice, the Xenyx works with the pi: --- Bus 001 Device 005: ID 08bb:2902 Texas Instruments Japan PCM2902 Audio Codec --- but streaming seems to be a bit unstable, probably because of power issues.

Can't you power the 302 externally from DC, or are you looking for something that doesn't require it?

well, it's all about mobility and size, in that case. what i want is a pocket computer equipped with wifi, 3G, a reasonable (stereo) mic and a battery that lasts some hours. so, one option is an ifon with a tascam or rode mic, the other one a PI or similar. i like the PI because i'm familiar with linux, that gives me some possibilities for interfacing, scripting etc. for stationary use everything is fine, i use an old laptop or whatever fits. --udo

The H2 is all kinds of noisy if you use it's 3.5mm mic input. Having never played with an LS5, but based on my experience with the LS14, I'd say it's probably a lot cleaner. I'm a fan of the old AT-822. They really found the sweet spot for X/Y stereo imaging with that mic. None of AT's current offerings get it quite right, in my opinion, even though they are superior in terms of self-noise and sensitivity.
I would actually like to experiment with MS miking, but the only way I can do that at the moment is with two variable pattern large diaphragm condensers and a software MS encoder, as I don't have hardware that will do that. Not something I'd want to keep outside as I currently do with my Behringer XM8500 dynamic microphones on a stereo bar. They've been almost completely exposed to the elements for almost four years with no issues.

let me know if i can help. spent some hours now with the PI, added a watchdog, 3G-surfstick support and remote control. looking into open wifi roaming / auto connect, but that's not so trivial it seems.
the idea is that the pi utilizes any sort of internet access wherever it is, registers with my server and can be controlled from a little phone app or website. well, basically a remote start/stop streaming button...

raspi battery powered and connected through a (not so reliable...) wifi, olympus ls5 with two primo em172 omni mics at the olympus' mic-in, the ls5 itself is connected via usb as a class audio device. have to say that the preamp of the ls5 is a bit damaged from experiments... it lacks a bit the low end... anyway...

what streaming software do you use? darkice seems to perform with about 30-50% load on the PI without glitches, if the network is reliable. so plenty of resources available, e.g. for a webserver ;)
i've made a cheap remote control for the PI, so that i can switch on/off streaming, reboot etc. from a smartphone web-app. it uses openvpn, ssh and phpseclib to establish a sort of console for selected commands (stream start/stop, poweroff, reboot etc.) along with the builtin hardware watchdog of the PI that should give a quite reliable unit. to test...
what i'm really looking for is a mini stereo usb preamp that supports plugin-power, so that you can connect a pair of electrets like the primo, wm61a, okm etc. recorders like the Olympus LS5 or zoom H2 work OK, but make the setup rather expensive.

That is about the amount of cpu usage reported with the PureData patch we have been trying. The network works fine for all kinds of stuff, so I don't think that's the problem. I think maybe there are some settings in the Alsa Mixer or the patch which need fine tuning.. will need some more time

exactly - whereas apart from that, esp with wifi and/or 3G, this has the makings of a cost effective solution.

Good luck with that mini-stereo mic preamp thing. There was one made by Andrea Electronics, which was supposed to be relatively clean. I think this is it. http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/ANDREA-USB-SA This thing makes lots of noise about noise reduction, though I expect it's the same noise reduction you see on Intel and Realtek chips, which can easily not be used. Of course, you'll have to be careful with mini plugs when you involve earth ground. Something like that should be much less an issue with a portable configuration.
I can tell you from experience that the Griffin iMic, which has a stereo mic input, and costs about the same, is very noisy. Don't bother.

and here's the pi setup in london camberwell with icicle usb interface and the disk image from gregoire our audio still stutters and periodically drops our for a few seconds - if that sounds familiar to anybody, please let us know
what streaming software do you use? darkice seems to perform with about 30-50% load on the PI without glitches, if the network is reliable. so plenty of resources available, e.g. for a webserver ;)
That is about the amount of cpu usage reported with the PureData patch we have been trying. The network works fine for all kinds of stuff, so I don't think that's the problem. I think maybe there are some settings in the Alsa Mixer or the patch which need fine tuning.. will need some more time
i've made a cheap remote control for the PI, so that i can switch on/off streaming, reboot etc. from a smartphone web-app. it uses openvpn, ssh and phpseclib to establish a sort of console for selected commands (stream start/stop, poweroff, reboot etc.) along with the builtin hardware watchdog of the PI that should give a quite reliable unit. to test...
what i'm really looking for is a mini stereo usb preamp that supports plugin-power, so that you can connect a pair of electrets like the primo, wm61a, okm etc.
same here
recorders like the Olympus LS5 or zoom H2 work OK, but make the setup rather expensive.
exactly - whereas apart from that, esp with wifi and/or 3G, this has the makings of a cost effective solution.

And they recommend this one http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-USB-SA-HIGH-GAIN
there are a lot of mini-usb devices, but, as this one, they're all 1-ch mono mic-in. need stereo...

this is a stereo device and it has PIP they've just told me
how good it really is I don't know - there are some clips on the site

I have an old M-Audio Micro which came with a 49-key controller I bought a few years ago, which has a combo stereo line/mic input. It’s actually pretty clean, but when you turn plugin power on (same as driving the input at what it considers Mic level,) it goes to mono. Rather unfortunate. I just hope the Andrea Electronics dongle isn’t as noisy as the actual mics they make.
