Hi all,
That was a great weekend. It was a real pleasure to hear so many streams. Congratulations to all those involved.
My main issue was the streaming dropouts. I noticed this particularly on my own stream which had been running fine both before the event and when I checked again just after. But was dropping our during the period that it was streamed live for the event. It's also streaming perfectly normally now, but I have noticed these dropouts in the past. They seem to be cyclical where the stream plays for around a minute, then drops out for about 20 seconds and then plays another minute or so before dropping off for 20 seconds again.
I've not been able to resolve if there is a local issue with the streambox, with the local network or broadband connection or whether it is at the server end of the chain.
Any thoughts? Is there anything that can be done to mitigate this?
Best wishes
Taylor
I'd guess the activities this weekend hit a server limit. U.

Hi Udo Indeed, my thoughts initially. So you would expect the drop outs to affect all the streams? This wasn't the case! There was occasional disruption. With my own stream I was listening for a while during the broadcast and I did not detect any problems. Only when it went live.

Yes I had similar, my stream dropped continuously during the 24 hours but has been fine since. I also noted that some streams sounded beautiful and seemed unaffected. Do I need to start googling rpi networking 😀
Some wonderful projects and streams, a fantastic festival of sound!

hi Taylor
So you would expect the drop outs to affect all the streams? This wasn't the case! There was occasional disruption.
I had audio hickups and high network latency, that is bandwith problems (server and/or network) and there were 404 responses (for source connects), that is server full, among others. of course that can change the next second, when clients and sources dis/connect. so maybe a combination of both. It's wild guessing without seeing the logs, but I run my own server since the end of the last century, so I have a feeling for some phenomena ;) U.
we experienced sunday 4:30 - 6 during the live broadcast to the national Czech radio network many dropouts in Locusonus stream and Reveil stream.
i think it was not the local connection but the server
probably too many users simultaneously?
I think it is the part of the game..
best regards and thanks for your contributions

Hi all
I should take this chance to say thank you to everybody who put up streams, and who also in many cases wrote detailed descriptions of the site and context of each stream. Together with the artists who contributed a remarkable parallel programme of work developed in and for the live field.
The whole Reveil broadcast exists, of course, as the assembly of these attentive, detailed actions, which in many cases are significant works in their own right.
It would be good if we can use some of the new low cost / low power streamboxes to make some of these streams available over the longer term. Maybe this can be a plan for the coming year..
I guess that, as suggested, the traffic on the server exposed some limitations of a setup that has been remarkably resilient, and operated as a common resource for a long time now. I know there's a process going on to work out what happened - probably a combination of things - and what can be learned for next time.
Thanks everybody

Thank you Grant,
It is most enjoyable - if a bit of a shock to the system - to get up once a year at 4am and be part of the Soundcamp experience.... one of the few things I do that connects me intensely with the reality of my existence as a small entity on a planet that is going round and round and round. I think the only other time I have this kind of 'planetary experience' is when there is an occasional eclipse and it is brought home to me that whilst I may hurry around everyday in my own little world, out there, there are much there are larger forces at play. This year's Reveil was also the incentive for me to build my binaural head - a crude, but acoustically effective piece of woodwork! And hopefully at some point later this year I will get my original stream box installed on Tiree.
All the best, Jo

Always cool to participate in a networked/streamed/collaborative project! Been doing that since 1990! In regard to your comments, Grant, I would challenge the group to come up with a spec'ed streambox configuration that can be packaged and perhaps sold to streamers where ever they might be located (I'm in the rural US west). While I have a strong electrical engineering background and definitely appreciate the discussions about devices on the list (and at aporee), I just don't have the time to tinker with testing a bunch of components and fabricate them into a reasonable device that I can deploy. Thus I have a system consisting of an older MacBook Pro running nicecast to locusonus with a Yeti mike (or I can use my Zoom H4n as mike), sticking the mike out an open window. This configuration is really not practical or possible to keep running all the time for a variety of reasons.
Cheers, John

Thanks John It's great to have your involvement always too Of course you are the originator of soundcamp's IRC obsessions..!
We re def on the verge of having an affordable really easy to work kit finally i think - which feels maybe quite significant for opening the project up I think it would be great to address that challenge and tie up the loose ends
We are all fond of the esoteric setups, like you describe - we all have them to some extent! And messing with the tech is surely in many ways a great alternative to simply switching on some sleek device..
But also we really want to increase the distribution of the microphones, not with ambitions to grow the project for its own sake, but to widen participation in under represented areas.
An affordable simple kit could go a long way to doing that at this stage, I think.

Definitely broadening participation and lowering the bar for entry - something like Reveil can be enjoyed by anyone, that was driven home to me more this last time with the participation from so many people just using phone connections.
