Okay, I just spent the entire morning dicking around with the old streambox.
I think the streambox is working better here (new location) where the electric is updated. With the same old box I no longer have the pulsing hum from the wireless card.
I tied the VGA nut to my water pipes which are grounded and that got rid of a lot of the base hum. It sounds more or less like when the VGA is plugged in.
The only thing is that it still crackles a bunch and doesn't really pick up all that much.

also: while futtering w the streambox, consider ordering a raspberry pi
I asked Alejo, who I believe built the streamboxes, and he is advising folks to move on to the Pi's, which he's been working with himself now. our streambox here recently failed, and we moved over to the Pi and it has worked well.

yeah, it was tied to my water pipes (no radiators here)...and those are definitely grounded.
I now moved the box and used alligator clips to tie the box directly to the main ground for the house. It's a copper line that goes directly into the earth only 1 meter away. Still, I get a buzz/hum. Hard to imagine that this is an improvement on what it previously sounded!! :) If I take the ground away, you get a nice bass buzz.
I'm open to any suggestions for how to improve this or debug the buzz. Is there a wrong place to attach the ground? Or, a better place?
thanks, best -august.

Okay, I think I've debugged it now. There were a lot of problems, but grounding wasn't the main thing.
The wifi adaptor I have and the streambox original mini-mic somehow interact to produce a repetitive click and hum combo. Not sure what exactly was going on there, but I'm guessing the proximity of the mic to the adaptor is the problem.
I then used a 3 meter mini jack to mini jack cable to get the mic away from the box. As soon as I plug this cable in (without the mic) I get the hum you were just hearing.
My final solution was to grab a table top TASCAM stereo mic and use that with the wifi.
Seems to be okay for now. The mic is in my basement pointed through the vents and on the streets at ground level. You can hear some birds and sirens and some ambience. I now live across from Highland Hospital (see: http://www.whatruwaitingfor.com/) so you will hear the bus and some ambulances now and again, some foot traffic as well during the day. At night, on occasion, you will also hear gun shots.
Have a listen if you can and let me know if the are any adjustments to the PD patch I could make to enhance it.
Also, how do I update my GPS coords so that the location on the map is correct?
best -august.
