Patrick I've always built my own electret mics in parabolic arrays for this project. When first thinking of using the PI a friend offered me a Snowball - USB and free, but it seems to be voiced for podcasting. I'll look into the MXLs, as they occasionally turn up on ebay.

I'm not sure which pattern you intend on using. I haven't used much in terms of decent USB mics for omni-directional pick-up, but I can think of plenty of uni-directional ones that would do better than the snowball for this kind of thing. Audio Technica ATR2500, MXLUSB.006 or .008 (get the usb.007 for a decent, clean X-Y stereo image,, though it's kind of pricy, and doesn't have a highpass filter, which would make it a bit nicer for this kind of thing.)

My porject including 3G, I use a powered usb hub to power the RPI, and plug all the usb devices I need (usb sound card, 3G modem, the Pi itself but just for power, mouse and keyboard). My opinion on the Raspberry Pi is that for the price it does the job well. I was able to stream audio with PD-extended and an usb soundcard relatively easily.
