Hi Grant:
I'm working on a project that is definitely a lot off the beaten path. It's called FX Radio. At it's most basic, it's a bunch of media players randomly sorting and playing selections from a huge collection of high quality sound effects all at once, but it's actually a bit more complex than that. I'll post here when it's ready for prime time, just in case someone is interested.
Yes, it's OK to add my stream to the map. I wanted to do that in the first place, but had some issues, and never really followed through with them. I'm assuming you'd be using a relayed Icecast mountpoint. As I told Jermoe off list earlier, if you need me to add another version of the stream in a different format, I.E. ogg or mp3, that's not a problem either. I have plenty of bandwidth to spare.
Meanwhile, here's a live stereo stream from London, which a friend is running. One day, we will probably make this one sound a bit better. http://2.onj.me/outside.m3u
And here's another one from Hohenems, Austria, from another friend of mine: http://eigeldinger.dyndns.org:8888/outside.mp3.m3u The guy who is running this stream actually told me about this project. I helped him set up a stream using similar hardware to mine, though without the dynamics processing, and using preamps that aren't quite as nice.

Thanks very much, Patrick
That sounds very authoritative!
Ideally we would like to work up the Liveshout iPhone app into a mobile broadcaster capable of providing good quality stereo streams to the locus server.
We should certainly take account of your discussion if we can take that forward.
Meanwhile we have added your stream to our inventory of streams for the reveil broadcast and we're still looking at getting it on the map - hope that's ok
And do please let us know about any streams you know of that buck the voice/music default

If you're working on something for the iPhone 3gs and later, be aware that there is a way to bypass the iOS audio processing, which, if you only have an internal microphone or something connected to the mic/headphone combo TRRS jack, can yield much nicer audio. If you're using a digital recording accessory, such as the Tascam IXJ2 or Blue Mikey Digital, this doesn't apply, since it bypasses the core audio standard noise reduction and other junk. I think this also applies with the original Blue Mikey on the iPhone 3gs, even though it's signal path is analog. Bypassing this process takes away the autogain and steep, roughly 200 hz high-pass filter. I don't know how to actually implement it, as I'm not a developer, but I know only of a few apps that have so far -- Bossjock Audio, RodeRec and RodeRec LE. When you take this processing away, for a decent input gain, you'll have to actually boost the audio, either by turning up the mic gain itself, or by applying some processing in software after the fact. Bossjock, for example, lets you change the hardware input gain, and then also applies compression and limiting after the fact. So, by cutting back on the input and driving the output harder, I can get a fatter sound that isn't over the top.
All of these apps I mentioned previously actually give you control of the internal phone mic gain at hardware level, which most things won't touch. It really is worth it for higher fidelity recordings from an iPhone. The 3gs mic is poorer than the 4/4s/5 in terms of fidelity, but now I know what all of these mics are supposed to sound like, not how iOS wants them to sound. There are actually some very subtle differences between the microphones used in the 4, 4s and 5. You'd have to listen very carefully to hear the differences, but they do exist. The iPhone 3gs internal mic sounds nothing at all like the other phones, even with the standard processing.
I don't know why more app developers don't know about this ability to bypass iOS audio processing. Perhaps it isn't as widely implemented because it is another layer of non-idiot proofing. As an audio professional myself, I find it quite nice to actually take control of such things if I need something on the spot, and I don't have access to any of my other gear, or if I want to quickly post something to AudioBoo or Soundcloud, and don't have time to hook up external mics and preamps.
I told the guys behind Bossjock about the fact that iOS audio processing can be bypassed when I discovered that FiRE2 (now RodeRec) had this ability, and they implemented it within a couple of versions.
Just something to consider.

youre right, udo: it's quiet in Cologne these days..
yes, still... i'm 600km away... next week...
On the other streams: I have just been sending out mails to streamboxers inviting people to take stock and hopefully get their boxes back in operation. There are some 40 streamboxes out there - a real resource - I'll keep you posted Conversely: I am stream fishing with Ragnar Olafsson and wondered how much you know of the wider live stream landscape just now.. I found huge swathes of amateur repeater stations and police and fire scanners in USA - very voice heavy. Do you have another Alfred Wegener Institute up your sleeve?
no, it's the only one. and i don't know of live streams other than the ones on locusonus.
will let you know what we come up with
i think the raspberry pi has some potential to boost it. a detailled howto on building a streambox based on the pi would be very helpful for many i guess.
definitely. we are working on this. we are planning a pi building workshop now probably for OCT at which we will document build and make howto's and make them available. Peter and Gregoire are fine tuning the pd patch for rasp pi.
we have been talking with london hacklab about pi interfaces. somebody told me you could use SPI protocol to attach a soundcard chip to the pi - in other words looking to design and build a box from scratch without relatively expensive components such as usb mic preamps. this is not my field. I don't know if anybody wants to contribute?
it's also worth to check whether android phones work together with class audio usb devices. that'd be a great all in one box with 3G, wifi etc.
ok so this is another approach we should try to firm up - we'll check it out
meanwhile, we are working on getting the Liveshout app up and available for iphone - 3GS and later I think
bests, udo
