It looks like Opus codec was designed more for speech coding than for good (general) audio.

Do you have audio examples (not speech) of both Opus and Ogg for 64 Kbps?

I assume that Opus is also not compatible with the Losusonus server.

The three basic trade-offs for streaming are:

quality/bandwidth
power consumption
network access

These items are all inter-related; there is no free lunch.

For me, quality is of primary importance, so this drives up all costs.

Cost definitely rises as one's streamer becomes more remote due to the need for cellular wireless and stand-alone power.

The farther away the streamer is, the more power is required to get the stream to a network socket.

The use of the wireless infrastructure of a commercial airplane is cheating in that regard. *:P tongue

But I understand that scenario as a proof of concept for the possible use of low bitrates.

Having worked in the telecom industry doing testing with a plethora of codecs, I personally don't have much of a love for any low bitrate codecs.

But many people like them for various reasons, especially when cost is the major factor.

But one gets what one pays for.

Out of interest, has anyone looked at Opus for low bitrate streams? You
can get some incredible results even at 16 to 32 kbps, technically even
in stereo at those low bitrates, though the stereo width is narrow until
you get above 64. The lower the bitrate, the more collapsed the stereo
image.

The size-to-sound ratio is even better than AAC Plus, and definitely
better than Ogg, although Opus isn't as widely supported for playback.

I recently did a 2.5 hour Opus stream from a commercial flight at 32
kb/sec just to see if I could hold it, and it worked well enough. This
mostly featured radio communication patched into my phone, and I also
had a cardioid dynamic mic I could pull up occasionally.

Certainly worth considering for streaming in areas where bandwidth is
extremely limited.
