OK, last spam on this I promise :)

socketxp is nice, but is limited to a 30 day trial. https://ngrok.com/ seems better and the free tier is not time limited, and you can ssh from the terminal. Nice.

To use the service, create an ngrok account, ssh on your home network to the streambox, and then install as a service with https://github.com/Eitol/ngrok-linux-service on the streambox. This sets up the ngrok service, which runs on start up. Once installed as a service, then you just connect your dongle, and then ssh like `ssh locusonus@4.tcp.ngrok.io -p 18319`. This maps/proxies (I think?) the streambox localhost server to the ngrok server. The connection details change on every reboot and are listed in https://dashboard.ngrok.com/endpoints/status No ssh keys required, just the standard locusonus user/pw.

Almost ready to deploy in the wild, back garden testing continues: http://locus.creacast.com:9001/sherkin_north_shore.ogg

Thanks Sarah, I'm using the arch based streambox image.

I can report that https://www.socketxp.com/ seems to work well with the streambox arch image, allowing me to ssh from my home network to the streambox operating on a mobile dongle network.

To set up the service, connect the rpi to the local network, and ssh to the rpi, and install the arm 32-bit installer as described here: https://www.socketxp.com/download/, there is a free tier account that allows for 2 "ioT" devices to be used. All very painless. Without further configuration, you must use the socketxp SSH web client, but this seems fine to me, and you can tweak alsamixer from afar, which is all I wanted. You can configure ssh from local terminal too: https://www.socketxp.com/docs/guide/iot-remote-ssh-access-over-3g-4g-lte-5g-cellular-network.html#configuring-socketxp-agent-to-run-in-slave-mode

I'll report back if I find any gotchas.

Thanks all for the thoughtful replies!

Sarah - I went to remote.it and tried to install it from AUR, where remoteit is not available for the 'armv6h' architecture, which lead me down an AUR rabbit hole, so I installed base-devel tools and debtap, and debtap to convert and install from page: https://downloads.remote.it/linux/v3.0.2/deb/pi/remoteit_armhf.deb, but then i discover deptap does not support armv6

phew! Did you install remote.it on an arch based rpi?

Hi All

I set my pi and my pc up with https://remote.it/ to access the pi ssh from home when it's out in the field on a 4G dongle - if you have good connectivity, it works really really well and was easy to setup

It’s some time since I’ve used a dongle with my stream box. I seem to remember the way we connected to the stream box was to connect the laptop to the 4g dongle and then ssh or use the website of artos.local where artos is the name I gave my streambox.
SSH pi@artos.local

Hi Aidan,

Unlike home networks, remote access behind a provider via a 4G Dongle (all cellular network in general) is complex to set up and unstable if your IP address is not static, SSH allowed on their network, etc.

About HTTP/SSH access, you probably also need to redirect all incoming external requests to your RPI on the E3372, I guess, if possible, like all other routers.
May be try with custom ports for the remote access configuration in the admin interface, not random (by default).

best,

Hi folks,

I have a problem with the a HUAWEI 4G Dongle E3372 which I am trying to configure with a streambox. the streambox is otherwise configured and tested as working. It's a rig with rpi zero, the latest 4.0-dev image, iqaudio card, and E3372 on OTG cable. I've updated the dongle firmware, turned on uPnP but can't connect ot the admin interface either over ssh or through the http admin interface at the stated IP:PORT address. The remote access works fine on my home network accessing the streamnbox from a phone outside the home network.

The stream is otherwise up, and streaming to the sound map.

Any ideas why I can'y access the admin or ssh remotely?

Thanks!

Aidan
