I tried the Griffin iMic, and found it to be incredibly noisy, eeven as a line input device, before applying any real gain. We're talking noise floors close to the 8-bit dynamic range here. Add to that the potential for issues if you're on the power grid with a pair of unbalanced electrets. Unfortunately, I don't really know of anything awesome that is as simple to setup and use. Andrea Electronics makes a stereo input dongle. I wonder if it might be a better alternative than the iMic. I don't have one to try, myself.
I'm going to pick up a couple of pies soon, so I would be interested in disk images/any configuration help, as I have never actually had my stream on the map despite running one for four years, mostly out of laziness. I should really do something about that. I would be using a Behringer UCA-222 audio interface lined into a set of outputs on my MG102C mixer, which has a pair of dynamic mics on it. Not a particularly compact setup, but it's proven to be very reliable, and can withstand rain, snow, etc. with almost direct exposure.

Hi August
Yes - it will be great to hear from the Oakland stream again.
This might be a good time to talk about Pi's:
We have been working on Pi streaming and now have 2 stable and good approaches:
- Mono over ethernet using Raspberry Pi Version B, Icicle from Blue
Microphones and XLR microphone.
- Stereo over wifi using Pi Version B, Edimax Wifi Adapter, Griffin
iMic and stereo electret condenser microphones [mono would also work].
Both these approaches require minimal setup and are designed for long term trouble-free operation.
We can help with setup and/or send you a free pre-configured SD Card with everything you need on it.
I just so happen to have a griffin iMic laying around. Maybe I will just try that out with the old box.
Any suggestions for a mic?
