Ah yes, the wireless issue hasn't been resolved completely. I'm copying this message to Alejo who might be able to help, but honestly the simplest and most reliable solution is probably to get someone to open a ethernet port.

(a possible hack is a wireless to ethernet converteur: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Vonets-2-4G-VAP11G-RJ45-WIFI-Wi-Fi-Wireless-Bridge-Finders-For-Dreambox-Xbox-PS3-PC/736090185.html)

PS I'm sending this to the locustream list in case someone has a better idea.

Hi Peter,

thanks for the reply. I am trying to set up the streambox with a wireless connection - as the location that we have in mind makes it difficult to access an open ethernet connection from the university (indeed an open ethernet connection is nearly impossible full stop)

From what i gather, it seems the wireless card in our streambox is quite temperamental, as it sometimes shows available connections, and then does not. Seemingly with a mind of its own. i have tried bringing down the wlan0 and then back up, but it does not seem stable either way. I have been trying to establish a consistent connection to an open wireless network, but have failed.

Is it possible to get a new box sent to SARC? If i cannot get the streambox to work, or a replacement, i will attempt to get an alternate machine to run the pd patch on, which may be the only alternative. Though it would be a shame not to use the streambox.

Hi Robin,

Yes that is correct the pd patch is designed to reboot the machine if it loses the connection. Although this might seem a little brutal it has proven to be the surest way of keeping the streams running.

If reboot happens systematically, I would start by checking that your ethernet wire gives you a connection using another machine.

If on the other hand its happening sporadically I would consult with the network administrator to find out why the connection is unstable.

Hi Grant,

I am trying to get the stream box up and running in a permanent position here at SARC, but i have seemed to run into some difficulties with the actual box.

At the moment, it is quite temperamental as regards its stability, which i had not encountered before with my initial tests.

I am not able, mostly due to my lack of knowledge with Linux, to access any settings page for the network preferences on the machine and it seems that if the machine cannot make a connection, it defaults to reboot. Is this correct?

any help much appreciated...

Robin

Hi Robin

That makes sense.

I don't know about this.

Jerome et al, could we review this? Are there still electret mics available? Or should we be looking at alternatives like usb interfaces?

I wondered about this too with my own streambox.

Grant,

thanks for the information. I have tested the Stream Box, and all seems to be working well. I should be able to get a permanent stream up soon.

I had one more question though, regarding the LocusMic/Electret that i have seen mentioned on the website. Would it be possible to get one of these sent to SARC? It would open up more interesting avenues for mic placement, as at the moment we have a condenser and mini-mixer mic solution, which as you can imagine, is not ideal - especially as we are favouring an exterior mic placement.

thanks,

Robin

H Robin and all

Thanks very much, Robin, for your reply.

It's great to hear we may soon have a stream back up from SARC.

On streambox setup: I have found this page of streambox faqs helpful - in fact it is not just faqs but also takes you through the setup procedure very clearly.

There are more general streaming guidelines here too.

If you have an queries at all let me/us know here or on the locustream list.

We are also looking forward to getting the Liveshout app fully integrated with the locus sonus server and map - which we've been in touch with Rui on lately

Hi Grant,

sorry for the delay in getting back to you about the Stream Boxes. We have had to track ours down, and figure the answer to a few of the questions.

Our stream box is located at Queens University Belfast, at the School of Sonic Arts, and i will be trying to get it up and running at some point early september. If you could pass on any info on getting it set up that would be great, as it will be my first exposure to getting it up and running.

Here are the answers to the questions that you were looking for...

1.  Do you still have your locus streamboxYES

2.  Is your stream up and running? [If yes, please go to 10] NO

3.  If your stream is down, when was it last up and running? Todaysart +/ MyCityLab in Brussels, October 2011 (and then running for one year after that)

4.  Are you interested in getting a stream up and running soon? YES

5.  What do you think are the most important obstacles to getting a stream going?  [It may be useful to review what it was that caused the stream to not get set up, or to go down, or the period when the stream stopped being maintained] Finding a suitable location, given technical requirements, though this is not seen as an insurmountable obstacle.

6.  What do you consider would be necessary to overcome the obstacles and get streaming (again)? Searching for said location.

7.  If you are not  in a position to operate a locus stream right now, do you expect to in the future? N/A

8.  If you are not in a position to operate a permanent open mic,  are you interested / able to provide a stream for a specific event eg for the period of the round the world daybreak broadcast on 3-4 MAY 2014? We should be able to offer a permanent mic, as well as the stream for any specific events.

9. If you are not planning to use your streambox any more, would you consider returning it so we can re-use it for another stream? We plan on using it.

10. We would be very interested to hear any technical or other feedback on using the streambox; as well as comments and reflections on your experience with the locus sonus project more generally. A central web resource for getting the stream boxes up and running would be nice.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Robin Renwick
