hi Zach & all, wittypi is nice, I've tested the v3 and mini, shouldn't be complicated to make it work on the locus image. I've checked with the manufacturer in CZ about hardware conflicts between witty and IQAudio, but there are none and it seems to work fine. The wittys have a feature to control input power, eg. shutdown / boot on lower/upper thresholds. Unfortunately both wittys do not work well with powerbanks and pi zero (and also pi2/3). the current is to low to keep the powerbank alive, one would need to increase the power consumption to make it work, but that makes no sense. Many thanks for this, Grant. This reminds me of something I've been mulling over for awhile: Scheduled streaming. I've been discussing it with Daniel Fishkin, who is working on a solar-powered stream in Virginia, USA. It would be great to have the stream turn off at night.
To really save power in a solar situation, I think we would need an external microcontroller that turns the Pi on/off (along with the 4G hardware). Several off-the-shelf boards exist [1] to deal with power supply switching, LiPo battery charging, etc. The Witty Pi [2] is the most full-featured I've seen: includes a switchmode power supply, battery-backed realtime clock, MOSFETs to control the power to the Pi, and software scripts to communicate over the GPIO pins. Unfortunately the simple installer from the Witty Pi manufacturer doesn't seem to work with the streambox image.
The addition of Codec Zero support in the streambox image really changed the game for me, and I wonder if Locus Sonus would consider adding support for either:
- An option in the web interface for stream start/stop times
- Built-in support for a board like the Witty Pi (scheduled
startup/shutdown of the Pi)
(Disclaimer: I haven't tried the Witty Pi - just passing on experiences from a friend.)
