Hi Grant:

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if I can get something going by 01 May -- probably not, unfortunately.

Just a couple of questions.

When the mics are mounted inside the walls of the box, is there any absorbing material involved, or do you just have them facing outward? Do you drill through the walls at the corners and use some kind of adhesive to keep the mics in place, and well separated? I'm just trying to get a mental picture of what is involved.

At one point, I thought about trying to cut sort of a knock-off Jecklin disk with a screen around it as sort of a reasonable intermediate between binaural and AB/XY compatible sound. I've used this kind of setup in the past for temporary configurations with a pair of LDC's, which is not quite within Jecklin's specifications. They should always be fixed omni, but whatever. I got good results. I don't think I can get away with that. I assume you have no problem with the box resonating?

I sort of like the idea of putting the entire thing outside, and using either solar power or PoE from an injector. This way, I can run only one much thinner cable out the window instead of two larger ones for the balanced XLR as I am now, but keeping the audio interface and Pi away from the mics is fine too.

In the past, I have been using Liquidsoap for streaming and a bit of dynamics processing, splitting off the source to also include an uncompressed, lossless archive, so my setup also includes a USB 3.0 bus-powered HD. Previously, I was using WiFi to connect to an access point, which was pretty far away. Stable, but very slow, especially for downloading archives when needed.

I have, so far, not found anyone to collaborate on putting this together. I'd like to have something I can (relatively easily) configure, test and ship once it's all put together, since I can't install it at the location myself at the moment.

Hi Dustin

Good to hear from you.

It would be great to get the old N Carolina stream back up and running - maybe for the Reveil broadcast at start of May..

. . .

We are using the Primo EM-172 capsule or its replacement the EM-272 to make up microphones. To use with 48V Phantom you can do a simple mod with 1 resisor and 1 capacitor, as described here:

You can buy the mics made up from micbooster eg here:
https://micbooster.com/clippy-and-pluggy-microphones/99-xlr-stereo-clippy-em272-microphone.html

You can mount these in the walls of a box such as the Dribox (sold in US as Sockitbox), which protects all the equipment and gives some separation between the channels. It works well but is a bit of work to build.

. . .

An alternative is to change approach and make a smaller lower power device using a Pi and the Hifiberry ADC Pro soundcard or the (currently waiting for new stock) IQ Audio Codec Zero. They supply PIP.

You can also use the cheaper and good AOM-5024L-HD-R capsule from PUI

These last approaches are from Udo Noll, who's been using them very successfully.

. . .

Check if you find somebody to colaborate with on the setup or let me know and I can help.

Best wishes
Grant

Hi:

I was recently told that the neighbors have become uncomfortable with my microphone setup back at the North Carolina house, which hasn't been online in a few months due to technical issues that I can't fix from here. It's a bit of a large setup -- a pair of cardioid microphones in a rough ORTF pattern connected to a Behringer UMC-202. They have withstood the elements for over 11 years, and I like the stereo image that pattern provides. I've never been too much of a fan of spaced omni pairs without some sort of baffle between them, though I'm sure I could probably get a better SNR with some small condensers.

So, my question is, what are you guys doing for stealth setups with good stereo imaging, low noise, good SNR and protection from wind and rain?

Keep in mind I'm not so good with hardware and will probably need someone to design/build stuff if required. I'd like to get this thing back online again.
