Hi Udo, there will be power nearby, and it will be on private land, also there is 3g/4g network coverage, so a mobile dongle should work. I’m thinking a NEMA rated weatherproof box for the pi/sound card/mobile dongle, it’s the mics I am wondering about really. Would a blimp survive a prolonged outdoor season? Perhaps mount mic capsules in some kind of weatherproof box with grommets to protect from weather ingress?
I have one primo EM 172 capsule running for 4 or 5 years continuously outside, protected by nothing except a garbage piece of foam, without any problems, guess they get wet all the time...
I had a stream running recently for about 4 days from a wetland near Berlin, the mics were wrapped in foam and fake fur (the cheapes you can get), but birds have plucked the fur for nesting and rain soaked into the foam. The mics (AOM electrets) went noisy, almost unusable. (But drying them out at 50°C for one hour in the oven has restored best performance ;)
oh, btw locusonus: the stream in Brno, CZ uses AOM mounted on a roof without protection, only some cheap foam and fake fur. Works fine since a few month so far.
So my advice: maybe protect the mics from direct rain, but don't seal them into something waterproof because of condensing water. Personally I'd go for electrets, like Primo or AOM.
bests, Udo
