We just realized that the automatic inscription to this mailing list was not functioning so we are sending this message a second time for the 200 or so people who didn’t receive it. We will endeavor to respond to technical enquiries up to and during the sound camp.
Dear streamers,
This is a quick update from Locus Sonus.
We would like to bring several bits of information to your attention:
- The third edition of SoundCamp Reveil, the 24 hour dawn chorus event will be taking place over April 30 and May 1st and we call on all who can make it to set up a stream for the event or even better take this oppourtunity to set up a permanent stream. http://soundtent.org/soundcamp_reveil.html
- A new and more stable version of our StreamBox distribution for Raspberry Pi is available. Aside from various bug fixes, this version can be accessed remotely over the internet and will work with the Wolfson and Cirrus sound cards (specially built for the Pi). For more information about new features and setting up a stream in general go here: http://locusonus.org/streambox/
- We will be providing a helpline on Thursday April 28th to get anyone who is experiencing difficulties setting up a stream either with Locuscast (iOS, Android) or with the locus stream box or with the stream map account. Many of you have created accounts which don’t seem to be very active so this might be the opportunity for you to get your stream up and running. Please send us an email with a skype contact or telephone number and we will contact you.
The audio quality of the streams is getting better and better and it is now easy to maintain a permanent stream since our latest build has various built in functions to keep it connected. Several streams are now binaural which gives an amazing impression of “being there”. There are many new artistic projects using the streams too: French musician Eric M has taken to using the Locus Sonus streams for his live concerts and we where showing the sound map at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris last week in the exhibition “Visions” where it met with much success. We are also collaborating with SARC (Queen’s University Belfast) to create a new streaming app mainly aimed at live performance.
If you have been using the Locus stream project for an art project we would love to hear about it (especially since we are currently writing up our research activities of the last 3 years).
Best Regards
Locus Sonus
Dear Friends,
Just a quick note of apology for sending my Mailchimp announcement to
our listserv. <locustream(a)nujus.net> is not in my list and that should
assure any of my future announcements to this listserv are meant only
for you its subscribers.
Interestingly, John Hopkins alerted me last Tuesday, after he had
oddly received an unsubscribe email from our listserv notifying him that
eric(a)ericleonardson.org had been unsubscribed, as if it were his address.
I would like to add that among those events announced in the previous
email, was the singing insect monitoring & soundwalk at the Chicago Park
District's North Park Village Nature Center. Naturalist Carl Strang gave
a thorough presentation on how to recognize the sounds of different
species of cicadas, katydids, crickets, and grasshoppers. This
information was used on our soundwalk and also to enlist citizen
scientists for Carl's Singing Insect Monitoring Program - SIMP.
In the concluding discussion Greg had the good sense to suggest to
Carl and the Park District staff that they set up real time stream on
the Locusonus map as a way to facilitate the monitoring program. Greg
added, as we're now aware with the Raspberry Pi and the new software,
that the cost and technical set-up is more affordable and accessible
than ever. He even offered to help the park district staff and other
participants with this. Thank You, Greg! I'm happy to connect you with
Kathleen Soler off list to pursue this further.
Also, I plan to post a follow-up about SIMP and the other soundwalks we
led on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. This will appear soon on the MSAE
website: http://mwsae.org/
Best regards,
Eric
