Dear Streamers, On MARCH 24 & 25 Locus Sonus is organizing the Internet Auditoriums symposium in Nantes (F). (see below). We are as usual very much counting on your active participation to keep your microphone live. Thanks for checking again the good sound selection and condition of your microphone... Ce terme réfère autant à la structure architecturale et au bâti qui définissent ou accueillent ce lieu d'écoute qu'au dispositif et à la situation acoustique et technique, partagée, collective et simultanée, qui permet à un auditoire ou à un ensemble d'auditeurs d'être présents ensemble dans un "espace" d'écoute. Les dimensions, les conditions, les perceptions et les natures de ces espaces ont continuellement évolué au fur et à mesure des modifications sociales, esthétiques et techniques liées à la diffusion sonore et musicale. La création artistique (musique, arts sonores, radiophonie, etc.) a sans cesse exploré les limites et réorganisé les espaces de ces auditoriums. Prendre comme question de recherche, celle des auditoriums dans leurs relations et influences dans les cadres technologiques, et l'interroger du point de vue de la création et de la réception artistiques, permet de révéler grâce à une approche par regards croisés tout un faisceau de problématiques remarquées comme étant les plus actuelles et, à la fois, très ancrées historiquement. Ainsi, cette réflexion couvre et convoque de nombreux domaines : anthropologie sonore, sociologie des usages communicationnels, histoire et géographie de nos espaces sonores, architecture acoustique, musicologie, études radiophoniques, esthétique et histoire de l'art, philosophie, etc. et bien entendu la création artistique et musicale. Les pratiques sociales, dont la création artistique, ont déployé et instrumenté depuis longtemps et de manière conséquente les régimes d'accès et de mobilisation techniques et technologiques liés à la diffusion et à la réception sonores jusqu'à l'émergence des auditoriums numériques d'aujourd'hui. Notre intérêt est d'interroger les caractéristiques acoustiques, médiatiques et sociales de ceux-ci, ainsi que les conditions auditives et visuelles, stratégiques et scénographiques, des pratiques de production et de réception sonores qui s'y déroulent et qu'il s'agit de décrire quant à la coïncidence des présences et la reconstitution des absences [1], à la nature ubiquitaire des sons, à la spécificité des processus musicaux et flux sonores qui y circulent et s'y produisent, et à la coopération orchestrale et syntone des acteurs. Ainsi l’Internet est devenu un espace hypothétique composé et constitué d'« auditoriums » parmi tous les autres lieux sociaux et architecturaux de l’écoute. Nous devons examiner les enjeux de ces distributions et dispersions - géographiques et temporelles -, des réaménagements de ces espaces et lieux traversés par ces sons transportés et propagés, de la multiplicité des auditoires dans des espaces homogènes et disjoints, publics et privés, synchronisés et désynchronisés, ainsi que, au regard d'autres scènes de l'écoute émergeant des flux et des ambiances, la capacité des réseaux électroniques à porter des auditoriums ("faire auditorium"). Par là, la segmentation ou la dislocation apparente des dispositifs sonores et musicaux en réseau ne doit pas faire occulter leur structure cohérente et fluide voire organologique en tant qu'auditoriums. --------------------------------- 1/ Quelles sont les nouvelles formes d'écoute ? quels sont leurs enjeux et leurs objets/objectifs ? Quels imaginaires animent-elles ? 2/ Cette diversité actuelle des modes de réception et d'écoute est- elle en train d'"augmenter" ou de "restreindre" notre perception de l'environnement et du présent sonore ? 3/ Comment modifie-t-elle notre écoute et réception des productions artistiques ? 4/ Comment se structurent, se mobilisent et se développent ces nouveaux auditoriums ? 5/ Quels sont les moyens et les conditions pour "instrumenter" ces modes particuliers d'écoute ? Comment les techniques actuelles inscrivent ou prescrivent-elles des modes particuliers d'écoute, et construisent-elles de nouvelles acoustiques ? 6/ Quelles sont les conditions de ces auditoires, dynamisant l'écoute individuelle et l'écoute collective, ainsi que celles de leur arraisonnement, de leur participation, et de leurs modes de partage, d'action et de présence ? 7/ En quoi modifient-elles et influencent-elles les pratiques artistiques (sonores et musicales), et, de manière plus large, les pratiques sociales de l'écoute ? http://locusonus.org/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------- /////// ENGLISH INTERNET AUDITORIUMS what are the new forms of listening ? an auditorium is a place of listening. The term refers both to the architectural structure; the framework defining or hosting a place of listening and to the acoustic and technical design ―shared, collective and simultaneous― which allows an audience, or a group of auditors to be together in a listening “space”. The dimensions and conditions; the nature of these spaces and the way we perceive them have progressively evolved in accordance with social, aesthetic and technical changes in audio broadcasting and other forms of audio distribution. The spaces of these auditoriums are continuously being explored and re-organised for artistic purposes (music, sound arts, radio broadcasting). This symposium will focus on auditoriums, their interrelations and influences within a technological framework and from the point of view of artistic assimilation and reception. Our intention is to clarify both current and past issues, which up until now have possibly been considered from a unique viewpoint. Thus, this reflexion convokes various domains: sound anthropology, sociology of communication, history and geography of sound spaces, acoustics, architecture, musicology, radiophonic studies, art history, aesthetics, philosophy, etc. And of course, artistic and musical creativity. Social practices, including artistic usage, have always deployed and instrumented sound techniques and technology, contributing towards the emergence of today’s digital, networked auditoriums. Our purpose is to interrogate those characteristics: visual and audio; strategic and scenographic ― the praxis of sound production and reception, which have developed through and for these spaces. These characteristics include: the concurrence of presence(s) and the reconstruction of absence(s) (schizophonia, acousmatic situation, sound spatialization, audio streaming, etc.); the orchestrated, co- ordinated and syntonic collaboration of participants and performers; the specific nature of musical processes and audio streams; the pervasive nature of sound. Thus, hypothetically, the Internet has become a universe of “auditoriums”; a vast panoply of auditor spaces, be they public or private, synchronous or asynchronous; to be considered among all the other social and architectural places of listening. We need to identify and analyse: issues relating to this geographical and temporal distribution and dispersion; the re-organisation of these spaces as they are traversed by sound, transported and propagated in new ways. The segmentation or dislocation of music and sound devices in a network should not obscure our perception of its coherent structure, which we propose can simultaneously be homogenous and in disjunction. 1) - What are the new forms of listening ? What are their purposes and what issues do they raise ? What realms of imagination do or can they engage ? 2) - Does the current diversity of reception and listening modalities, increase or restrict perception of our sound environment in its temporal and spatial immediacy or expansion ? 3) - How are new auditoriums modifying our reception and perception of different artistic productions ? 4) - What are their structural characteristics, how are they set up and developed ? 5) - What are the means and conditions necessary for the instrumentation of these particular types of listening ? How do current techniques establish and encourage specific forms of listening and perception, and how do they participate in building new ‘acoustics’ ? 6) - What conditions favour the formation of these audiences, who engage in both individual and collective listening?
