IDEOLOGIES AND ETHICS IN THE USES AND ABUSES OF SOUND Koli, Finland, June 16-19, 2010 CALL FOR PAPERS (reminder: abstracts by October 12) The 2010 WFAE conference will be held at Koli in Eastern Finland. Koli is a plausible site for reflecting upon ideologies, ethics and soundscapes, since it was amongst the key places of the national romantic artist pilgrims in the late 19th century Finland. The main organisers, Department of Finnish Language and Cultural Research at the University of Joensuu, Finland and The Finnish Society for Acoustic Ecology (FSAE) invite researchers and artists from all disciplines to join this forum of discussion. Confirmed invited and keynote speakers are (in alphabetical order): Steven Feld, Charles Hirschkind, Bruce Johnson, Anahid Kassabian, Andra McCartney, R. Murray Schafer, Barry Truax and Hildegard Westerkamp. More information at: http://www.joensuu.fi/soundscapes Proposals are invited for papers, workshops, roundtable, or artistic contributions relating to, but not limited to the following topics: NATIONS, NATIONALISM AND SOUNDSCAPE There has been an abundance of research on the topic of nationalism and music. What about nationalism and soundscape? Within sound of religious movements Martin Stokes mentioned recently that in order to understand certain Islamic movements today it would be crucial to understand their soundscapes. Collective listening or giving ?voices? to subjects and their religious experiences, are some examples. CONSTRUCTING PAST AND PROGRESS IN THE USES AND ABUSES OF SOUND Both past and progress can be used and abused as part of many ideologies. Have past soundscapes been used as a resource as part of these negotiations? The ideology of progress, then, is intimately related to the acceptance of noise as an inevitable phenomenon. ETHICAL CHALLENGES OF WORKING WITH THE SOUNDS How do soundscape researchers and artists answer to the ethical challenges of working with the sounds of other people ? and of themselves. How do we understand cultural convergences, differences and sameness? Or would it just be more important to learn to tolerate the other? Should the researcher or artist make an intervention -- or would it be best just to observe the uses and abuses of sounds from outside? THE COMMODIFICATION OF AURAL SPACE, SOUND AND SILENCE How does silence, its commodification and tourism fit under the same sky? What kind of strategies can the citizens and planners develop in different localities in order to guarantee the soundscape comfort, tourism as a means of livelihood and the touristic search of silence all at the same time? What about the urban environment with its ubiquitous transphonic phenomena? Who has the right to fill the urban space with music, and how is it currently happening? [locustream] inactive stream in Chicago misplaced on map

Hello, I wonder, could the owner/administrator of the Locustream named "chicago_northside" correct either their location or stream name to more accurately reflect where it actually is placed, please? Currently it is located in Chicago's downtown, loop area, not on the "North side". As Jerome mentioned, you can type your address in, in the admin page. Or, to be more accurate, find your longitude and latitude and enter that just below the address box. [locustream] new chinese stream

I'm happy to announce the birth of a new stream in Yunnan close to Lijiang in south west China where I am currently doing a residency. Details are on the map but I did want to mention that we finally got rid of all ground noise by running a long wire from the stream box (fixed with one of the screws on the serial plug to a metal staircase outside which makes a very efficient ground (there is no earth on the mains electrical installation). We made wind protection using scouring pads and a small sieve covered with several layers of nylon socks which we then fixed under the eves of the building. I finally have my router working and the streambox connected. Since my keyboard will only type a question mark character "?" when I type the underscore character "_" I had to go in and change my settings on my admin page to remove the underscore characters and also to allow me type shorter names into the Pd patch. In the Pd settings, stream-name is "westside" (it was was "421ndrake"), your-name is "ericl", and location is "chicago" I pressed the bang button to apply values and connect. In my admin settings, city is "chicago", location name is "westside" (it was was "421ndrake"), and your name is "ericl". You can see it on the map if you zoom in to Chicago, north of Garfield Park. Now, how do we get the Icecast server to recognize "chicago_westside.ogg" instead of "421ndrake.ogg"? BTW, in the admin page the "Pd patch" link was 404: "The requested URL /soundmap/lhoosl.html was not found on this server." [locustream] ground-noise

Dear All I've noticed that most off the streamboxes have a small amount of ground noise. I'ts kind of a shame because the sound quality, especially with the new microphones is getting quite good. If you have a screen plugged into the streambox its mains connector automatically provides a ground, however when you take the screen away, since the streambox only has a 2 pin mains adapter that nasty ac buzz appears.
