...and hopefully improved.
We had to shift the microphone from it's hiding place behind the
shutters. Its now on the ledge of the toilet window and equipped with
a revolutionary new wind breaker.

la mouvance des flux. artist statement:
A constant hum, hissing, white noise... then out of this background
of noises, lending an ear to it, some frequencies
stand out.
Birds, I suppose.
Then, a plane flies across an imagined blue sky. An emergency siren
fades in and out to let place to whistling birds.
Everything seems in order again. Only irregular klaxons come to
disturb it from time to time.
This is what could be heard on one of the streams from Marseille,
France, on a regular Sunday, through the apparatus set up by the
French-based audio art research group Locus Sonus. Open microphones
located in different regions of the world broadcast their immediate
soundscape. I put Hong Kong onto the global open-microphones map. la
mouvance des flux takes its root in these streamed soundscapes, and
explores the idea of continuous listening, the complex relationships
between flux and sound events. This work proposes to render audible
the inaudible and the faraway in ways different from the radio, and
to transfer the global streams within a sound field around the
listener’s head. Sounds are mixed and intermingled, confusing the
perception of background and fore-
ground within the composed soundscape. It explores sound as a
continuous dynamic stream, where sounds rub and crash against each
other, and weave into each other to create new tensions. The
experience of time is also a way to alter the nature of the listening
activity - are these remote sounds static events, or are they
changing by nature? In other words, what are we listening to?

Hello,
I would like to inform you that I will propose a work made from the
streams in a sound art show in Hong Kong.
Several artists will participate in this show called in midair: Felix
Hess, Anson Mak, Kawai Shiu Sumei Tse, Yeung Ngor-wah, Yuen Cheuk Wa,
and Robert Iolini. For more info about the show: http://
www.soundworkshongkong.net/
My work entitled "la mouvance des flux" is a soundscape composition
based on an idea of random walk (generated through Brown algorithm).
In this initial stage, a computer system made in max/msp select the
streams, and spatialize them in a virtual space around listener's
head (the streams are encoded into HRTF format for headphone
listening). The streams will be put in movement, creating new
tensions and forces between them. I hope to continue to develop this
project later based on what comes out from this experimental stage.
The exhibition will open on Saturday 16th June at 6 pm (HK time) and
will last until 15th July. Audience might come anytime during daytime
to experience this work.
It would be nice to have as much streams as possible as they are the
basis of that work, so that the re-composed soundscape can be varied.
Thanks a lot for your help.
Cheers,
cedric.

Hello,
I have upgraded to Pd-0.39.2-extended-rc2 and noticed that my stream
does not run the CPU up to 90% as often. When I was running
Pd-0.39.2-extended-rc1 the patch would run up the CPU quite often.
The new Pd-0.39.2-extended-rc2 build seems to address this problem to
some degree. I have only had to restart PD twice today, rather than
6 - 8 times with the prior version.
You can download the PD builds @ http://at.or.at/hans/pd/installers.html
Cheers,
Marc

I've just sent up a stream from my shed window in Glenview, IL.
(17yr_cicadas.ogg) The sound is of the 17 year Cicadas (Cigales),
which are beginning to reach their full mating chants. There is a
deeper rumble in the background (from miles of wooded areas) and the
more local hiss from those nearby. The next brood like this won't
occur in the Chicago area until 2024!

Today (June 6) at 2 PM Chicago time @ 70 degrees F, the cicadas are
chirping at 76 DB - peaking at 80 in my backyard. Tomorrow it will
be at least 15 degrees warmer, so they should be louder. It's not
unusual for them to reach 90 DB at full output. I'm guessing that
they will peak in mid June.

Hello all. Several important annoncements:
1/ Locus sonus as been given a new icecast server by a generous
sponsor. This means that we no longer have any limit to the number of
ogg vorbis streams simultaneously present. We are hoping to expand
the project to include as many new streams as possible so please feel
free to spread this news and have other people contact us if they
would like to get involved.
To stream from the new server please download the new patch here:
http://nujus.net/~locusonus/site/streams/download.html
login: lhoosl
You'll find a few new features, you can now enter your streaming data
without going into programming mode also we've included some filters
so that you have more control over the sound of your stream.
To check that your stream is present on the new map:
http://nujus.net/~locusonus/site/streams/mapcreacast.php
To check on the server:
http://locus.creacast.com:9001/
As soon as everyone has migrated to the new server we'll switch the
map on the website.
2/ Locus Sonus has been invited to set up a stream installation over
a longer time period (1 year) at the Musée de Gap: http://www.ia05.ac-
aix-marseille.fr/musee/musee.htm. The plan is to hang parabolic loud
speakers at different locations in and around the museum each with a
different stream so that visitors will experience the sound
environment from your microphones either by stumbling on them as they
visit the museum or by deliberately returning at different seasons,
times of day etc. Our plan is to slowly build up the number of
listening spots over the year as more streams become available,
however the show is due to start in the middle of june so we're
counting on you all (or rather we're asking you nicely) to keep your
streams up and running in as permanent manner as possible.
3/ Another generous sponsor, a computer recycling company called
micro orange: http://www.microrange.com/ have given us a palette
load of PCs which although old, are ideal for running a stream. We
are currently configuring them with an ubuntu system and sound cards
so if anyone needs a machine to be able to stream permanently, please
let us know so that we can plan on getting one to you.
4/ We will be presenting "Locustream tuner" and various perfomance
works using the streams at the the festival Bandimages in Bourges for
a week from May 7th. It would be great to have as many streams up and
running as possible, also we'll be preparing (using the streams) the
week before from April 30th.
5/ Some streamers have been using the streams for art art works of
their own, we're very open to these initiatives and would like to
hear about any which you might be involved in. The idea is to put up
links from the Locus sonus website and we are also wondering if we
couldn't work some of your stuff into our public presentations...
